Council Bluffs, Iowa is a small city in northwest Iowa on the Missouri River. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Council Bluffs County. The first permanent settler in what is now Council Bluffs was James K. Polk in 1847. At that time, it was located on the banks of the Des Moines River northeast of present-day Cedar Rapids. A post office called "Council Bluffs" was established in 1852, and remained in operation until 1904. In 1886, Indianola township (later named Cedar Rapids) became an independent municipality within Council Bluffs County; however, it retained its own government until 1907 when it became part of the larger town of Council Bluffs. In 1909, a group of businessmen–led by Sidney Sanger and John Davenport–founded The Chicago National Bank which would become one of the most influential banks in America for over fifty years. In 1912, they founded The Davenport Trust Company which would grow into one of America's largest financial institutions with assets under management totaling $100 billion as of 2018. The city's origins go back to 1847 when James K. Polk settled here with his family from Kentucky to found a new home on the banks of the Des Moines River northwest of present day Cedar Rapids; this area eventually became known as "Polkville." During World War I (1918-1919), much effort was made to supply food and munitions to Iowa troops stationed overseas; these efforts resulted in significant economic development for both Polkville and Council Bluffs during that time period; many local businesses were started or expanded thanks to this wartime boom economy. 1st Lt George Armstrong Custer died fighting against Indians at Wounded Knee Creek on November 17th 1918 while serving with 6th Cavalry Regiment commanded by Captain Floyd Bennett; President Woodrow Wilson visited Polkville soon after Custer's death and paid his respects at City Hall where he pronouncedPolkville "a fine place". Council Bluffs, Iowa is a small city in the U.S. state of Iowa that was founded in 1847. The population was 23,824 at the 2010 census and is the county seat of Lehigh County. It is also the historical center of Council Bluffs, which began as a fur trading post on the Missouri River in 1827 and became an important transportation hub for early settlers in central Iowa. Designed by George Washington Carver, Council Bluffs has been called "the breadbasket of Iowa." Its fertile landscape and ample agricultural resources made it a natural place to start a town, and over time its development helped make Council Bluffs one of America's most prosperous cities. Today, it remains a bustling cultural and economic center with major industries including information technology and engineering; education; retail trade; health care; professional services; and tourism. Council Bluffs was founded on July 24, 1847 by two men named James Tilton (1811-1876) and Elijah Hicks (1785-1855). The town was located on the confluence of the Des Moines River and Missouri River near present-day North Park Street/East Main Street in what is now downtown Council Bluffs. At first there were only 10 permanent residents in CouncilBluff – all fur traders who had moved into what is now Lehigh County from Illinois during their wintering periods between 1825-30. The first settler to arrive in what would become Council Bluffs was Captain John Smith (1796-1868), who arrived on November 29, 1827 with his family from Detroit, Michigan Territory under General Lewis Cass’s command as part of a military expedition to explore new territory east of the Mississippi River. After spending several weeks trading goods with local Native American groups he decided against moving permanently to this area due to lack of suitable land or water supplies for his settlement encampment. On December 2nd William Hogg (1802-1864) arrived from New York City with his family after speculative investments failed to produce any significant results during his previous woolen business ventures thereabouts. He purchased 640 acres northwest of present day Center Street from David Logans heirs for $1 per acre ($92 worth today). This acquisition marked the beginning of what would be known as Hogg’s Prairie Reserve where farming operations would continue until becoming fully developed around 1900 when railroads came along to provide commercial access to these valuable agricultural lands northward into Illinois
Council Bluffs is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 21,651 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous municipality in Iowa after Cedar Rapids. The city was founded on April 6, 1853 by Captain James K. Polk and his wife Lucy A. Polk as a result of land grants from the United States Government to prominent citizens of Des Moines County. Council Bluffs became an incorporated city on February 16, 1902. The first post office inCouncil Bluffs was established on December 2, 1846 by Eli Whitney with the name of Cedarburg. On January 1, 1850, it changed its name to Council Bluffs after voting by City Council to that effect. In 1854, Major General George Armstrong Custer passed through Council Bluffs while campaigning for the United States Senate against incumbent John Sherman and his friend Salmon Pelly entertained him at their home until he left for some unknown purpose near Waterloo Junction; then they went out drinking together (the first public display of such behavior in Iowa). The next year Custer's forces were engaged in a Battle of Buena Vista Creek and killed or captured most of his command including Custer's senior officer Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Reno; this event has been variously attributed to bad weather or cavalry incompetence (); however historians now believe that Buffalo Bill had something to do with it as well (). On March 3rd 1865 Union Army Captain James Kipps led 1400 men under Colonel Christopher Ladd into town square where they were met by 200 local militia led by Mr White who ordered them back outside following which Kipps took control and ordered his force into disorder killing many civilians before withdrawing () . This event is generally considered the start of戦争 in Council Bluffs (); subsequent events there would lead to increased violence between those groups leading eventually to organized crime within the community (). One day after General Ulysses S Grant's visit to Sioux City he stopped off at CouncilBluff on his way back from Fort Dodge; upon finding out about this Harry Vail informed Grant about what had happened so he offered financial assistance (). Grants involvement here started what would be one long pattern of government intervention (), culminating inGrant becoming President Ulysses S Grant when Republican Abraham Lincoln was assassinated () . In 1895 Mayor Wm Halsey erected a large granite monument reading "Erected By Mayor Wm Halsey In Honor Of His Friends And Local Citizens Who Died In The Civil War" (). Posthumously Mrs Halsey donated $5000 towards its construction().
