The Council Bluffs, Iowa coast guard gift history dates back to the early 1800s when the first Coast Guard station was established in this town. The earliest gifts given to the Coast Guard were simple items like cups, mugs and other vessels. In 1903, a small boat was gifted to the Coast Guard for use on Lake Michigan. From then until 1967, the Coast Guard Station at Council Bluffs accepted only donated goods. In 1967, when Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which prohibited any United States Military assistance to any country that had violated international law, the Coast Guard Station at Council Bluffs had to turn away many donations of personal property from members of the military. As a result, they received some valuable donated items such as watches and jewelry. Since 1998, when Congress eliminated all restrictions on military support for our nation's police departments through section 822 of Public Law 106-65 (the " Gifts for Peace Act"), all gifts given by members of the military must be registered with and accepted by council bluffs coast guard station before being delivered. This allows us to track all donations made in support of our community and its citizens. Today, we continue to appreciate all that those who serve within our community give in terms of time and effort put into making it a great place to live and do business.
