Coralville is a city in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. Coralville is located on the Iowa River, about 12 miles (19 km) east of Ames and 14 miles (23 km) west of Council Bluffs. It is one of the few remaining original U.S. towns founded before Iowa became a state in 1846. The first recorded settler in Coralville was James Caldwell in 1845. A post office was established at Coralville in 1848, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The town site was platted by John Hickey and David Wells on November 1, 1850; the name "Coralville" originated with this choice. In 1854, Edmund Davenport donated land to become a town center; construction began that year and the town opened for business on December 1, 1855. In 1861–1865, during the American Civil War, Coralville served as an important military stop along the Mississippi River because of its strategic location between Union forces commanded by General George McClellan and Confederate general Robert Ewell Jr.. After the war ended, Coralvillians rebuilt their homes and businesses using materials brought over from Illinois by railroad workers who had returned home after fighting for the Union side. On January 1st 1886,[3] Mormon pioneers arrived at what is now Coralville from Nauvoo via wagon train under Brigham Young's direction[4]. They were given two-thirds of all present-day Johnson County to settle which they did on April 15th 1890[5]. At that time there were only 10 residents living within limits of what would eventually be called Coralviliee due to lack of farmland or other suitable locations for settlement outside those limits until later when more acreage became available through grants from various federal agencies including member states within “The Great Plains” area bounded by Nebraska & Wyoming [6], Dayton [7], Cedar Rapids [8], Kansas City [9] & Sioux Falls[10]. With today’s population numbering over 6500 people,[11][12] many aspects associated with early days such as small town feel still persist today!
