Coralville is part of the Cedar Rapids-Council Bluffs Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Coralville was James W. McGregor, who arrived in 1836 and platted what is now Coralville township. McGregor's family name came from his birthplace on Ireland's Isle of Skye. In 1839, John Aiken bought land adjoining McGregor's and founded Aiken & Company car manufacturing business with two blast furnaces and four boilers to make cars for the growing city of Chicago. By 1865, Aiken had expanded his company into a railroad system making him one of America’s largest transportation magnates. In 1877, local citizens organized their own school district which became Coralville Township High School District No. 1 in 1901).
