The Iowa Air National Guard's 138th Airlift Wing is responsible for the deployment of aerial gifts and ceremonies to support the state’s 14 military branches, including the Iowa National Guard. The wing has a rich history that dates back to World War II. In 1942, when Coralville was an unincorporated community in Davis County, Iowa, the U.S. Army built an airfield on what is now known as Creekshire Air Force Station to provide a landing strip for bombers. From then until 1951, when Coralville became an incorporated town, it depended onAAF support to celebrate national holidays and other important events. In 1951, the AAF reactivated its 137th Airlift Wing at Sioux City Municipal Airport and assigned it to Coralville as part of Operation Dixie (the repatriation of Japanese-American citizens from Japan). That same year, Iowan Congressman John Pfeiffer asked President Truman if he could appropriate $5 million for the creation of a USAF unit in honor of Iowan combat veterans who had served in World War II and Korea. Truman approved the request and designated 138th Airlift Wing as the first postwar USAF unit activated in Iowa. By 1957, however, 138th Airlift Wing was inactive because its parent organization was reassigned from Washington State to Nevada due to budget cutsback within Congress at that time. On 1 October 1959 – just one month afterIowa became a state –138th Airlift Wing deployed airborne gifts for President Eisenhower’s inauguration parade in Washington D C . The following year saw another deployment; this time with SPC Donald L Bacon flying Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's personal plane during his visitto Des Moines on 15 May 1960. Bacon also flew with Presidents John F Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson during their visitsto Ames on 5–7 January 1961and Burlington on 20 May 1963 respectively; both flights were notable for carrying 313 passengers instead of fuel containers orWedding Cars which would have been more than necessary since no president ever traveledby air himself throughout his term as president! In 1964-1965 338TH AIRLIFT WING did deployments along side 32nd ACR IN THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY TO CONFIRM REFUGEES coming HOME AFTER THE VIETNAM WAR while stationed at RAF Fairford England UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF 34TH ACR; THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT AMERICAN AIRCRAFT WERE USED TO SUPPORT MILITARY ACTIVITIES ON EARLY JUNE 1945! In 1966-1967 338TH AIRLIFT WING Deployed alongside 33rd ACR FOR OPERATION TOWER IVARRAH while stationed at RAF Mildenhall England UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF 2d AGME ATTACK SQUADRON WITH RESPECT TO STRATEGIC OPERATIONS IN NORTHERN IRAQ AND SOUTHEAST LIBYAN ASSEMBLY OF XXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX After returning from operations over North Vietnam we changed our name back to "338TH Airmotive Group" On 21Mar71 Eagle crews transported 3 EAGLES(A-13) into Saudi Arabia For Operation ' Harvest' To Recover Sanitation Canals worth millions Of Dollars For Saudi People

The Iowa Air National Guard deployed a gift history in Coralville, Iowa on Feb. 9, 2017. The history is of the Iowan Air National Guard's 158th Airlift Wing which has shipped and delivered gifts to troops and families since 1959.
Coralville, Iowa is a small town in the east-central part of the United States. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. It is located on Iowa's eastern border with Missouri. The village was founded by pioneers in 1838 and named after one of their Indian guides, Coralville (a corruption of "coral" or "clear water"). The area that now makes up Coralville was first inhabited by the Pequot Indians. When they were forced to cede their land to white settlers in the early 19th century, some of them moved into what is now Coralville and other areas around it. Many of these early settlers were farmers who started out raising corn and other vegetables on their own properties. In 1868, however, when Iowa became a state, many residents chose to move to the new state because it had more opportunities for education and work than neighboring states did. One of the first air forces to deploy gift baskets was the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAF EF). From 1948-1949, a USAF EF unit stationed in Germany donated 150 basketsful of food and gifts to various German military units. In 1951, USAF EF flew shipments of food and gifts from RAF Mildenhall, England to installations in West Germany. The gift history of USAF EF can be traced back to World War II when American troops donated surplus civilian goods such as radios, clothing, bicycles and toys to allied forces during the war. After the war ended, many Americans decided that they would like to give back by giving back their time or treasure in support of military campaigns overseas. Some individuals decided that they would like to become members of an airborne corps or serve with distinction on an aircraft carrier while others volunteered their services as social workers or nurses during peacetime. Oneofthe earliest deployments of gift baskets occurred during World War II when American troops donated surplus civilian goods such as radios, clothing, bicycles and toys to allied forces during the war. THESE CABLES WERE PUSHED INTO SERVICE BY MAJOR GENERAL HALDEMAN IN THE EARLY 1960S WHEN HE STARTED FORMULATING MUSTERS FORTHE AIR FORCE; THIS WAS BEFORE WE KNEW ABOUT THE WORLD WAR HISTORY COMMITTEE! AFTER THAT TIME IT WAS MORE OF A COORDINATED ACTIVITY BETWEEN ALLIED AIR FORCES AND THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE ALLOWING THEM TO SHIP GADGETS TO THEIR BASEEAST ENGLAND ACCOUNTANCY OFFICE – NOW WE KNOW AS PETITIONING FROM OUR ARMY RESERVES!!! The reason given for this deployment is unknown but it may have been due either To celebrate victory over Japan following World War II or To show appreciation for all assistance received from allies throughout hostilities including supplies given through Operation Overlord which led up to Allied Victory over Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime on May 8th 1945... It should be noted however that UAE did not continue this practice after 1949 as Gifts were instead sent directly from Headquarters USAAF European Command HQ located at RAF Tanworth... This gifting activity continued until 1973 when Headquarters USAAF Europe disbanded." Withdrawing Gifts Packets began again with Continental United Kingdom Agency serving as sender until 1994 when responsibility passed from central headquarters onto individual squadrons/ wings within each army area/airborne divisional area.......Since 1997 there has been one recipient per squadron/ wing responsible for sending gifts.........." Coralville is a town in Price County, Iowa, United States. The population was 573 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Des Moines metropolitan area. Coralville was founded in 1872 by J. H. Flanders and his wife, Sarah A. Flanders. The first post office was established in Coralville on February 1, 1875. The first store in Coralville opened its doors on May 2, 1876. When the railroad arrived in Coralville in 1884, it brought with it new businesses and residents alike who soon built a Progressive architecture district around downtown which still stands today as one of the most popular neighborhoods in Iowa City. The town experienced rapid growth during World War II when many local companies turned to wartime production for their products like munitions and airplane parts due to theAxis threat of war ending without Germany’s capitulation or an Allied victory over Nazi Germany. In 1945, following World War II's end, many veterans returned to Coralville as they began rebuilding their lives after years of service overseas; this growth continued into the next decade as new businesses entered into town including two hospitals and numerous small businesses that supported local agriculture and industry before becoming major employers today such as Stateline Solutions and FirstEnergy Corporation (FERC). Today, Coralville retains much of its former Progressivism with a strong focus on education which has led to several notable successes including reductions in crime rates while also creating dozens of jobs within the community through various business ventures both public-sector and private-sector; these successes have helped make Coralville one of Iowa's most successful towns overall since its incorporation over 100 years ago!
Coralville was founded in 1847 by George W. Polk and his wife, Julia C. Dearborn. The town grew rapidly due to the opening of the Iowa Western Railroad in 1854 and the development of corn farming in the area. In 1870, Coralville became a city and remained so until 1957. The City of Coralville was merged into the City of Des Moines on January 1, 1997.
