Clive, Iowa is a town of just over 10,000 people that was founded in 1893. The town owes its start to the construction of the first navy ship, USS Constitution. The ship was built by a group of men led by Capt. Samuel Mather and Lt. John Davenport in Clive-on-the-Iowa River. The ship was used for training naval officers and served in the American Civil War. In 1865, the Constitution was decommissioned and sold to a Dutch merchant organization for use as their flagship. The Constitution served as the Netherlands’ flagship until 1886 when she became part of Spain’s fleet and joined her army in Cuba. In 1898, after Spain lost her war with US forces and capitulated at Veracruz, USS Constitution sailed into Havana Harbor to provide support for Spanish forces fighting US Marines ashore against US forces loyal to Spanish President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. After Spanish troops withdrew from Havana Harbor following US victory over them at Bayamo Naval Air Station on April 14th 1898 USS Constitution sailed back into Clarendon Harbor where she arrived on April 18th 1998 having transported more than 4,500 sailors and marines across numerous seas during her tour of duty as America’s last war cruiser
