Clive, Iowa is a small town in the northwest corner of the state of Iowa. It was founded in 1887 by John Clive and his wife Sarah. The townsite is located on the proposed route of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The first settler in Clive was George Wirt, who built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1893, three brothers—Edwin, Harry, and Frank Wilkinson—founded the Farmers National Bank in Clive. The bank became one of the most important institutions in Clive and served as a financial foundation for local businesses and individual families for more than fifty years. Clive was also home to two colleges during its early years: Drake University (opened in 1892) and Centralia College (established in 1925). After Drake University closed its doors following World War II, Clarett College replaced it as Iowa's only university serving women students. Centralia College closed its doors after thirty-six years of operation but has since been reborn as an arts college known for its music programs. Today, Clive remains a vibrant community with active businesses and cultural attractions that support agriculture, manufacturing, transportation infrastructure development, healthcare services and other local industries.
