Clive, IA is home to one of the most iconic coffee roasters in the United States. The Clive Coffee Company was founded in 1916 by two American engineers, Hiram Maxim and Charles Wetmore. The company rapidly became well-known for its delicious and roasted coffee. Today, Clive Coffee Co.'s coffee beans are sold throughout North America and worldwide. When Hiram Maxim opened his first store in Clive in 1916, he had no idea that the coffee he was selling would become such a popular commodity. He only knew that he could sell his beans because they were good quality and fresh. In fact, Hiram Maxim's success as a coffee roaster reflected the popularity of his product - every customer came back for more! The first few years at Clive were very difficult - there was little money to be made from sales combined with World War I being waging on all fronts. However, through hard work and determination, Hiram Maxim managed to keep the company running despite these obstacles. By 1921, the company had grown so large that it decided to move its roasting plant from New York City to Clive. This allowed them to roast their own beans exactly where they wanted them - right here in Iowa! Today, we continue to enjoy great cups of Java from our favorite Clive Coffee Company!
