The Iowa Air National Guard's 129th Fighter Wing is the only active fighter wing in the United States. The wing was activated on 1 July 1942 at Hill Air Force Base, California as part of the Army Air Forces. It was redesignated the 129th Fighter Group on 20 October 1942 and assigned to Eighth Air Force in England. The group became combat effective on 15 January 1943 when it joined VIII Bomber Command's offensive against Hamburg, Germany. After being Consolidated Aircraft Corporation-equipped with P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft, the group transferred to Ninth Air Force on 8 May 1944 and simultaneously received Boeing B-29 Superfortress aircraft. After making its first attack against Tokyo Japanese airfield by bombing it from bases in Australia and New Zealand, IX Bomber Command shifted its focus to Yokohama and Hiroshima where it destruction of two bomber fleets resulted in Japan's surrender. The group then returned to England and demobilized on 30 September 1945. Clive, Iowa has a history of being an air force community. The first military installation in Clive was United States Air Force Station Clifton Springs which opened on October 1, 1941. The original purpose of the station was to provide training for fighter pilots. In 1946, the facility became United States Air Forces Command Headquarters and Training Region which housed all American air forces stationed in India and Pakistan. On February 15, 1949, United States Air Force Command Headquarters and Training Region was redesignated as First Tactical Air Division headquarters with its command authority vested in Commander First Tactical Air Division (1TAD). 1TAD's mission was to provide operational leadership for all USAF tactical air commands located in India and Pakistan. On September 20, 1951 the wing activated at 1TAD as the First Tactical Fighter Wing (1TFW). On October 16th – 17th both wings flew their first combat missions against North Korea. During these operations 1TFW lost two aircraft including one that crashed into a mountain after takeoff from Andersen AFB near Honolulu Hawaii. Additionally during these days squadron symbolically retired it’s last F-94D Phantom(F-86D) at an event held at Wheeler AFB near Phoenix Arizona before being moved to Kunming China where it continued active untilactivated on May 31st 1954 when it merged with 10 FW of USAFE to form 10 FW/AAdm Clive USAAF Base in China

Clive is a small town in northwestern Iowa, United States. It was first settled in 1871 by German immigrants. Clive's history began with the arrival of John and Emma Hoenlein, who purchased two sections of land east of what is now Clive from the Dakota Sioux tribe. The couple named their new settlement "Hennepin" after their neighbor on the other side of the river. In 1872, they founded the post office at Clive and opened a store to serve travelers. By 1880, Clive had a school and several businesses. The population grew rapidly during the early years of Iowa's railroad Mania, as railroads brought workers and materials to the area. In 1911, when trains stopped running through Clive due to trackage changes near Dubuque, residents voted to incorporate as a Village. The incorporation was formalized by Mayor Wm. Hodges in 1912 and granted official status by the state that year. The economic boom times were short-lived; however, they left an indelible mark on Clarendon history through their contributions to both local economy and community spirit. Thanks in part to their efforts, Clarendon developed into one of Iowan's most prosperous towns during its early years; it continued this trend well into recent decades."
