In 1876, Fielding Coffee Inc. was founded in Clinton and started producing coffee for local grocery stores. In 1928, the company was merged with JB Robinson Coffee Company to form Fielding-JB Robinson Coffee Company. The company continued to produce coffee until it was sold to Peet's Coffee Corporation in 1970. From 1970 until 1998, Peet's Corporation operated as Fielding-Peet's Coffee Company. In 1998, the company was acquired by Keurig Green Mountain Corp., and its operations were relocated to Denver, Colorado.

The town was first settled by Europeans in the late 17th century, and their descendants continued to live there until after World War II. The town was briefly renamed Des Moines in 1892 due to city growth adjacent to it, but the name reverted back to Clinton after a few years. Clinton served as the capital of Iowa from 1851-1858, when it moved to Council Bluffs. It again became the capital from 1861-1865, during which time it played an important role in the Civil War. In 1893, a fire destroyed most of downtown Clinton and forced its residents out into what is now known as “The Ghetto”. With no other options available for them, these people developed into a strong community that continues to thrive today. Today, Clinton is home to several businesses and restaurants that make it an important stop for tourists on their way through the state. It also remains an important cultural center for locals and visitors alike due to its rich history and many attractions nearby.
