The first people to live in Cedar Rapids were Sauk and Fox Indians who came from eastern Canada in 1812. In 1825 they founded a town called "Cedar Grove" on what is now Wabash Avenue near today's capital building. In 1830 they moved their town to what is now downtown Cedar Rapids after losing land in nearby Dubuque due to flooding. The original name of Cedar Rapids was "River Heights". A group of Scotsmen named John Sellar and James Watt bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land along the river for $2 per acre in 1836. They started a flour mill and built a house with sawmill power on First Street between West Third Avenue and Main Street. This became known as Sellar House which still stands today as part of downtown Cedar Rapids history museum complex called Sellar House State Historic Site #440711). The town charter was granted in 1840; it read: "This Town shall be governed by an elected Board of Directors with powers vested therein…." In 1851 when Cedar Rapids incorporated as a city it adopted its present name after General David Dixon Woodruff who fought in the Mexican-American War under General Winfield Scott (1846-48) at Buena Vista Creek Bridge over Black Hawk Sioux River outside Los Angeles County California (). Dixon Woodruff had also been given an award by Scott for his gallantry leading cavalry against Apache Native Americans at Palo Alto Pass near Tucson Arizona (). On July 4th, 1861 during American Civil War Battle of Fort Donelson (Goodnight's Charge), General Fremont's 1st California Infantry Regiment under Captain George Armstrong Custer joined forces with Captain Jesse James Lincoln's 3rd Nebraska Cavalry Regiment led by Colonel William Tecumseh Sherman (1839-1918) from Independence Missouri () near where Custer died two days later while leading his men into battle against Union forces under Major Robert Estrada (1829-1920). Reverend Lorenzo Dowling officiated at this sad event which became known as "the day that America fell". After American victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House Virginia on April 9th 1865 Cedar Rapids reverted back to its prewar status as a small frontier stop on the Missouri Pacific Railroad before becoming an important railroad junction serving Des Moines through Minneapolis/St Paul Minnesota The late 19th century found several clubs or organizations active within Cedar Rapids including: Anacondas Women’s Club Incorporated – organized 1889; Masonic Lodge #927 – organized 1897; Presbyterian Church - established 1865; Business Men’s Association 1905; Knights Templar Order 1886 & 1914
