The naval history of Cedar Rapids dates back to 1881 when the first Naval Militia company was organized in this city. The organization soon became a reality due to the fact that during the early 19th century, Iowa was a key battleground between the United States and Mexico. This conflict led to an increase in military activity in Iowa, as well as in Cedar Rapids. In 1881, the Iowa State Guard was formed, and it served as both a militia force and a backup for local navy units. By 1903, the navy had become quite active in Cedar Rapids. A new naval Yard was built on Third Street near downtown, and it functioned as a base for Navy ships and submarines. At this time, there were also two separate naval barracks located within downtown limits – one for European warships and another for American ships. During World War II, Cedar Rapids played an important role in providing munitions for the war effort. The city also hosted large ammunition storage facilities that helped keep Minnesota supplied with munitions during WWII. In addition, the navy set up several watercraft docks within Downtown boundaries so that vessels could be unloaded and storing materials ashore without having to leave their moorings. In 1946, Cedar Rapids became home to its own Naval Air Station (NAS). NAS Cedar Rapids continued serving our nation through both World Wars II and Korea – until it closed its doors permanently in 1979 following Operation Desert Storm! However, NAS Cedar Rapids’ legacy will live on long after we have left its doors behind!

As rail transportation increased throughout northern Iowa, Cedar Rapids began to grow rapidly as aonsequent bedroom community for Des Moines. during World War II, when Des Moines was Hit hardest by air raids, residents organized into dozens of small groups to rebuild their homes after attacks took place near their neighborhoods; some also formed local defense organizations such as PTO #1-CedarRapids
