In 1912, the First National Coffee Shop moved to its current location on Main Street. The shop continued to grow in popularity, and by 1938 it had acquired its own roast house and began exporting coffee to other states. Cedar Falls, Iowa is a small town located in Cedar County, Iowa. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census and 2,906 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cedar County. The first European to visit Cedar Falls was Captain James K. Polk in 1845. He was on his way from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Lawrenceburg, Indiana when he stopped at Cedar Falls and noticed the falls. After touring the falls, he decided that it would be a good place to establish a military post for the United States Army in order to protect threatened Indian tribes in Central Illinois. In 1846 Congress authorized construction of Fort Dearborn on the east bank of the Des Moines River opposite Cedar Rapids. The fort was completed in 1847 and served as an important army depot until it was abandoned in 1865 because of lack of defense against Confederate attacks during the American Civil War. In 1892 two entrepreneurs organized what became known as The grain company which grew into one of Iowa's largest agricultural firms with over $20 million worth of crops grown between 1907 and 1920 alone . Today there are numerous restaurants, bars and other businesses along Main Street throughout downtown Cedar Falls while also finding smaller shops dotting around both sides of Elm Drive (Old Business District). A great many visitors come here each year for Pioneer Days which celebrates all things related to early settler life including visiting local museums filled with artifacts dating back to 1784 when John Doane started building homes near present day Cedar Rapids
