Cedar Falls, Iowa is a small town in the south-central part of the United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. Cedar Falls is located on the banks of the Des Moines River, about 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Iowa City and 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Minneapolis. The town was founded in 1855 by a group of Scandinavian immigrants who had come to America as refugees from Norway. Cedar Falls became an important center for agriculture and commerce throughout its early years, and its name has been associated with both wonderful things that have happened here – such as the invention of artificial flowers – and less impressive accomplishments, such as being one of only two towns in Iowa to be served by a movie projector during World War II. Cedar Falls, Iowa is a small town in the Black Hawk County region of Iowa. It was founded in 1847 by Methodist missionaries, and became one of the leading towns in the Midwest. Cedar Falls has several attractions, including its famous arts and crafts scene, its beautiful riverfront park, and its many historical sites. The town was originally named after Cedar Creek, which flows through it. In 1847, Methodist missionaries arrived in Cedar Falls to start a new mission school in what is now Black Hawk County. The missionaries named the town Cedar Falls in honor of this creek. The first post office was established at Cedar Falls on July 9th, 1847. The population of Cedar Falls grew rapidly from its early days as a small town to over 1,000 people by 1850. By 1860, it had reached 2,500 people and would grow even more during the late 19th century until reaching 5 or 6 thousand by 1912. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Cedarfalls saw some intense fighting between Union soldiers and Confederate troops. One notable battle took place on November 24th 1862 when Union forces attacked Confederate positions near the village of Prentissville Landing on the Missouri River.. The BattleOfPrentissvilleLanded resulted in significant losses for both sides with about 50 dead on either side combined according to Confederate sources[1]. This event helped solidify settlers’ allegiance to the Union side over that of their opposing Confederacy counterparts throughout much of central Iowa during the war years[2]. Many businesses were established within Cedar Rapids during this time including breweries such as Anheuser-Busch and Schlitz,[3], cotton mills such as Peoria Mills and Grist Mill,[4], meatpacking plants such as Armour Meat Packers Incorporated[5], and other companies such as John A & J Rafferty plumbery[6]. Some residents also worked long hours themselves outside of their homes while others rented space inside local businesses for processing purposes[7]. Despite these challenges faced by many entrepreneurs during this time period there were still some successes despite difficulties such as Anheuser-Busch establishing itself here into what is now called “the beer capital of America” due mostly to growth within corn whiskey production during this time period[8] . Overall though business conditions varied greatly from community to community across much of central Iowaduring these difficult times with smaller towns often struggling more than larger ones did.[9] However overall most residents continued to thrive despite challenging economic times due largely to their strong work ethic characterizing them quite aptly as “the self-starter generation”; able not only To sustain themselves but also contribute positively towards their communities while undergoing tough times alike [10]
