Cedar Falls, Iowa is a town in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,723 at the 2000 census. It is the most populous municipality in Cedar County and the second most populous municipality in Iowa after Des Moines. Cedar Rapids lies to the north-northwest and Ames to the east-east. The three towns share a common border between them and share an airport with Des Moines. The first permanent settler in Cedar Falls was George Hargrave on November 10, 1847. Hargrave built a log cabin on what is now First Street nearpresent day State Highway 693. A post office was established at Cedar Falls on January 7, 1848, under the name of Galesburg. On October 15 of that year, two men named Wheeler arrived in Cedar Falls from Illinois with goods they had bought from Captain Daniel Boone and his party of nine pioneers who had explored this area during the winter of 1845–46. They started a grist mill which still stands today on Second Street east of present day Elmira Road south of US Highway 20 (now I-35W). In December 1850 Davenport & Company organized as a transportation company for settlers coming into this area by wagon train overland from Independence Missouri via Burlington Iowa Territory and Clear Lake Minnesota Territory - their depot being located at what is now State Highway 693 just east of present day First Street/Route 20A In 1852 John Smith erected a sawmill on Elk Creek northeast of town which continued operation until 1865 when it was destroyed by flooding; however another sawmill was erected within one year by Jno Phelps & Brothers near present day First Street/Route 20A In 1854 James Fenton organized what became known as "The Farmers' Union" which conducted agricultural demonstrations throughout centralIowa including public meetings at various locations including downtown Cedar Falls where he spoke on behalf ofedited resolutions protesting discrimination against farmers by early state legislators On February 24th 1861 four citizens were arrested while attending a meeting to discuss ways to protect protesters outside the capitol building when pro guards opened fire killing six people including five women and one child before leading those arrested into custody This event led to further protests throughoutthe state againstietelementary government brutality towards its citizens
