Burlington was founded in 1854 by Captain John Baldwin and his wife Esther as a trading post on the Burlington River. In 1865, Burlington became the capital of Dakota Territory. The city was incorporated on October 20, 1892. On May 6, 1907, Burlington-Jackson County Bridge were opened when the Burlington-Omaha Road and Bridge Company built the first bridge over the Iowa River in what is now Burlington. The bridge carried Route 25 across the river and facilitated travel between Omaha and Jackson Counties for many years. The original span of the bridge was replaced in 1959 by a new crossing that took into account advances in road construction technology.
