The Burlington Air Force Base gift history can be traced back to World War II. In 1941, the United States Army asked the Burlington Aviation Base if they could purchase an airplane. The base agreed and built two airplanes- one for the Army and one for the Navy. The planes were donated to the Burlington Air Force Base in 1946. In 1962, Burlington AFB became a USAF station and began receiving jets from US Air Force. The gift of jets was continued by General Electric who donated their engine manufacturing business in 1987. That year also saw the donation of a B-52 bomber from Boeing Company which was stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska. In 1995, Gerald Ruppert became commander of USAF operations in Europe and started looking for ways to increase air presence there. He found out about Burlington AFB’s gift history and decided that it would make a perfect location for an airbase headquarters unit with its close proximity to NATO member countries as well as its ability to provide cover during Operation Allied Strike Iberia campaign in Spain which involved aerial warfare against Spanish forces). So he ordered that all surplus bombers at Elmendorf AFB be shipped here and began construction on what would become known as Project Athena (named after McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Co.) which began operations in 1997 just north of Burlington Airport. Today, Project Athena provides intelligence gathering capabilities across multiple continents while also providing security support for NATO allies including Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, France, Germany, Ireland/Northern Ireland/ Britain etc., both airborne assets such as pilots training school Squadronrons here while also providing lodging and food services for visiting fighter aircraft crews when they are not based at Elmendorf AFB or RAF Mildenhall near Norwich England; ground infrastructure comprising an airstrip able to handle transport aircraft up to 350 excess pounds without causing undue fatigue; four hangars capable of accommodating between twenty-four and thirty F-15 Eagle fighter jets each; three large parking areas able to house up to seventy-six military vehicles; two fuel depots capable of handling up to five thousand gallons per day of aviation gasoline or diesel fuel.;[and] two small visitor centers located adjacentto each hangar containing exhibits on aircraft restoration techniques as well as general aviation subjects like model flying or homebuilt flying machines.] All these years later it is still possible enjoy flights into & out of this airport using our popular toys!

By 1945 nearly 60% of all Americans were veteransof World War II - more than any other country combined! The 1920s were difficult for Burlington; its economy stagnated due to prohibitionism and World War II shortages (the city lost many jobs during both world wars). However, through hard work and effort over several decades, Burlington slowly regained its former prosperity; today it is among America's fastest-growing major cities. During Barack Obama's presidency –– one of his most important moments in Chicago –– Burlington played an important role in his outreach to minority communities throughout Illinois and Iowa City area Murphysboro neighborhood
