The Boone, Iowa Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the Civil War. The unit was organized on August 29, 1861, and mobilized for the Union army in September of that year. From its inception, the Boone NCOs were responsible for providing military aid to their fellow citizens. This assistance ranged from providing food and ammunition to guarding trains and supply trains as they passed through town. In 1865, the Boone National Guard was re-organized into a brigade under command of General George Armstrong Custer. This brigade served in various campaigns throughout the war including the Battle of critical Hennepin County north of Minneapolis. The unit was also present at Appomattox Court House where Custer's body was found after his death at the battle. After the war ended, many veterans returned home and reinvigorated Volunteer organizations such as the Boone National Guard Brigade which continued to serve until 1903 when it merged with other brigades within the national guard system. In 1903, another battalion also called 3rd Battalion (Boone) Iowa Army National Guard was activated and deployed in Cuba during World War I as part of United States First Division commanded by General John J Pershing. In 1921 this battalion became 4th Battalion (Boone) Iowa Army National Guard when it amalgamated with 2nd Battalion (Davenport), 5th Battalion (Council Bluffs), 6th Battalion (Milwaukee), 7th/8th/9th BattalionsIowa InfantryNational Guardsa total of 16 battalions plus 1 reserve battalion which served concurrently during World War II with distinction receiving recognition for participation in most significant operations being accomplished against enemy forces across all theaters A final mention should be made about 3rd Battalion (Boone) Iowa Army National Guard which disbanded on October 1st 1946 effective upon expiration of its enlistment period

In 1855, Boone became the capital of Iowa Territory, and it continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1907. A major reason for the growth was the fact that Boone had no railroads and had to rely on wagon trains to reach its residents. The town experienced several economic booms during its time as a capital, including a period of goldmining in the 1860s and 1870s. During this time, Boone also became known for producing some of the best cornmeal in America.

The Boones were among the first farmers to settle in the area. In 1839, Boone became a county seat of Iowa. He died in 1862 and is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
