It is generally accepted that the first firearm to be purchased by an individual in Bettendorf, Iowa was a revolver on November 3rd, 1868. The revolver was bought by John Ringling from G. W. Davenport for $10. It is interesting to note that this purchase marked the first time handguns were offered for sale in Bettendorf and the first time pistols were sold as well. The next handgun to be purchased in Bettendorf was a six-shooter on December 5th, 1869. This purchase was made by Henery Prentice from Alder Gulch and it is likely that he acquired this gun through John Ringling who had recently moved to Bettendorf from Ames, Iowa. On January 2nd, 1870, a rifle was purchased by Jno Loring from James Sanger at the store located at 309 N 4th St. This purchase marked the beginning of what would become known as “the Gun Purchasers’ Association” in Bettendorf. This group of individuals helped to promote and establish responsible gun buying practices within our community and helped make Bettendorf one of the leading firearms communities in America during its early years. Bettendorf is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. Bettendorf is the county seat of Bettendorf County. It lies on the Missouri River and is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The name "Bettendorf" comes from German settlers who named their town after their leader, Wilhelm Friedrich Bettendorff, who had come to America in 1834. The first settler in what is now Bettendorf was George Hildebrandt, who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on the east side of the river and named it "Hildebrandt's Ferry". The first store opened in 1839 by John Jansen and his brother-in-law Jacob Kappelhoffer, both natives of Germany. In 1841 Isaac Sanger established a gristmill south of present day Bettendorf Cemetery; he also ran a wagon train that conveyed goods downriver to Dubuque for sale there. In 1846 Winthrop Kellogg settled near present day Kellogg Boulevard and built a sawmills along with other mills soon afterwards. In 1850 Matthias Wirth founded what became known as Wirth's grocery store which still stands today as one of Bettendorf's downtown attractions (the original building has been moved). In 1861 Samuel Morse established a post office at what is now corner Main Street and State Road 3rd Avenue; this became the center of population for that township until Des Moines took over that role in 1904. In 1865 Charles Aiken opened an establishment called Aiken's Store which later became known as Kress' Grocery Store (now part of Sears). That same year William Hanks began operating an establishment called 'Frazier Bros.' bakery located on 2nd Street between High School Grounds and Fourth Avenue (later renamed Illinois Boulevard). That business continued through World War I until 1920 when it closed due to lack of customers or competition from better operated stores within city limits since then businesses have included: Ritchey’s Dairy (now Interstate 44), Hess Brewing Co., Dawes Barber Shop & Supply Co., Goldhagen Glass Company, Gritsmann Clothing Company, Wittner Drugstore & hardware store, Bigelow Hardware store - all now gone but not forgotten! In 1924 Harry Rowe started operations at what is now corner First Street and Harrison Avenues as 'Harry Rowe Shoes'. This business continued until 1930 when it closed because Harry Rowe could no longer afford marketing expenses associated with such an high volume chain operation! After Harry Rowe's closure many small businesses located around First Street including Wagner’s Bakery - later becoming popularly known as Weiser’s Market - Arya’s Hairdressers Annex & Saloon were open before being destroyed by fire in 1951 during the Great Depression!! However more recent businesses situated around Harrison Ave include Griggs Chevrolet dealership operated by Hoyt Moran since 2006-2007 with future plans to grow into another business complex featuring retail space + hotel+office space!!!
