The Bettendorf Naval Shipyard was the first naval shipyard in Iowa and it played a significant role in the state’s Naval History. The shipyards started operations in 1845 and by 1861, they had built three frigates, four corvettes, six submarines and twenty-one torpedo boats. In 1865, the Navy transferred the Bettendorf Naval Shipyard to the city of Des Moines as part of a larger construction project funded by American taxpayers. The navy used Bettendorf for various purposes until its closure in 1951. The Bettendorf Naval Shipyard is now a museum that tells the story of naval ships and their builders in Bettendorf. The Bettendorf Naval Shipyards were founded in 1845 by Captain Samuel Dillingham and his team of engineers under the leadership of Captain Lewis Wertenbaker. The shipyards were located on Pier 8 on Buffalo Creek east of downtown Des Moines. At their height, the Bettendorf Naval Shipyards employed over 1,500 workers including master craftsmen from abroad who constructed torpedo boats, frigates and other warships. In 1861, when Iowa became a state, captain John Pappan commissioned two ships at the Pettit Boat Yard: USS "Iowa" (1861) and USS "Winthrop" (1862). These vessels helpedfortify Omaha Beach during World War II before being decommissioned into service after hostilities ended. After World War II ended, USS "Iowa" was donated to the University of Iowa Museum while USS "Winthrop" served as an exhibit vessel at Cedar Rapids Municipal Airport until she was scrapped in 1988. USS "Ohio" (1863), USS "Newfoundland" (1864), USS “Drury” (1865), HMS Belfast (186S) – all three vessels were built at Petersburg Dock Company just north of Des Moines under contract to Govt., US Navy from October 1863 through July 1865 with completion date unknown but likely early December 1863 ; also ordered original ironclad ram , CSS Virginia , but never completed .
