Bettendorf is a small town in the Iowa state of Iowa. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. Bettendorf is located in Putnam County. It is part of the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area. The village of Bettendorf was built on a farmstead that still stands today, and it was originally called "Triton". In 1836, James Fenton bought the farm and renamed it Bettendorf after his father-in-law, Friedrich Bettendorf von Heidenheim. In 1868, John Wahl sold land south of the village to Henry Jenssen and formed the townsite which we know now as Bettendorf. From its foundation until 1959, Bettendorf had one post office which served primarily residents of neighboring Waterloo Township. In 1907, an Agricultural Experiment Station was established at Bettendorf by President Theodore Roosevelt with funding from America's First National Bank. The station became known as Iowa State University in 1916 when UI announced that it would become a coeducational university with Des Moines artilleryman Colonel George Armstrong Custer as its first president and first female professor (the school's first woman administrator). In 1927 UI moved to its current campus on Beechwood Avenue in downtown Bettendorff across from Central High School; this location has been home to UI ever since. After World War II, many businesses closed down or relocated due to technology advances and changing consumer tastes; however, five out of seven mainstay businesses still remain today within close proximity to their original locations: A&P supermarket (now owned by Kroger), Department Store Duane Reade (now Macy's), Radio Shack store (now Sears), Kwik Trip restaurant (now GrubHub) - all within blocks or less of each other! During World War I, Bettendorf was one of two Iowa towns that refused to participate in the war effort because they felt their neutrality would be violated. After the war, the town began to grow rapidly again and reached its peak size by 1920. However, during World War II, Bettendorf became one of six Iowa towns that were forced to join the military due to an increase in patriotic fervor across America. The town lost its status as a small community after 1945 but regained some of its former popularity beginning in 1960 when it hosted the Iowa State Fair.
