The Bettendorf, Iowa National Guard was established on October 9, 1871. The unit was first organized as the 1st Cavalry Regiment. On May 22, 1872, the 1st Cavalry Regiment was redesignated as the 19th Infantry Regiment and became part of the Iowa National Guard. The regiment was reorganized on January 14, 1875 as the 2nd Infantry Regiment and served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment disbanded on September 3, 1865.

Bettendorf, Iowa is a small town located in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Bettendorf is the county seat of Polk County. It was founded in 1853 by Jacob and Catherine Bettendorf and named after Matthias Bettendorff, an early settler in what is now Polk County. In 1871, it became a city. Bettendorf had a population of 5,780 as of the 2010 census. The first store in Bettendorf opened on Main Street in 1853. A post office was established here on December 16, 1854, and remained in operation until it closed on November 1, 1914. The first school in Bettendorf was built on Davison Avenue in 1865. In 1870, the city merged with neighboring Waterloo to form one municipality called Waterloo-Bettendorf. The population of Waterloo-Bettendorif was 811 when it merged with Bettendorf; however, this number only reflects people who lived within the city limits at that time - not those who lived near or inside of Bertrand Township which formed part of the new municipality. In 1907-08 there were three tornado touchdowns reported within three miles of Bettendorf - one just outside town limits and two more farther out into rural Polk County - both occurring during a severe thunderstorm watch issued later that day by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In 1868, the town became a city and began to build up its infrastructure. In 1907, Bettendorf had a population of 100 people and was incorporated as a city.
