Bettendorf was platted in 1868 by farmers and early settlers from Germany and Austria. The first post office in Bettendorf was established in 1870. The Bettendorf Cement Works started operations in 1892 and remains one of the largest employers in Bettendorf today with over 350 employees. In 1916, the Bettendorf Electric Railway became operational; it served as an important transportation link for residents of the small town until it closed its doors in 1984. Today, there are no public transportation options available within or outside of town limits

Smith and it took its name from General Lewis Bettendorf who moved to what is now the town in 1869. The first post office in Bettendorf was established on December 6, 1870. It was renamed Bettendorf in 1904 after General Lewis Bettendorf who had served as the military governor of Iowa during World War I and died in 1917 while serving as the Commandant of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). The history of this small town begins with farming and ranching which continues to be an important part of its economy today. In 1890, Samuel Latham leased 2,000 acres (8 km²) of land near present-day Bettendorf for $2 per year to become a farmer and rancher. With this lease came the start of a long-term relationships between Latham and his farmers that continue to this day. By 1915, Latham's farmstead included twenty cows, fifteen horses and five pigs; four cattle drives were also operated each week from his property into nearby towns for sale to local farmers or customers at local fairgrounds. This business model continued until 1978 when microwave ovens made it difficult for livestock operators to sell their products door-to-door due to advertising restrictions placed by radio stations at that time! Today there are only three farms remaining on Latham's original 20 acre parcel: one operates a tractor dealership on Highway 52 next door; another runs a feed store; and another produces hay for local events such as Fourth Of July fireworks shows! Bettendorf has experienced many changes over the years due to various factors including annexation by Sioux City in 1907; incorporation as a city by Des Moines in 1912; prohibition of liquor sales within city limits during World War II; postwar growth with numerous new housing developments; population decline following the late 1990s recession which began during President George H W Bush's administration; current growth with increasing access to Interstate 80 through downtown which has led to more businesses opening up outside of the old district boundaries
