In 1847, John Fetterman purchased the farm that became Bettendorf from David Hockley. The town was founded in 1853 by Ezra Meeker and others when they found an opening on one of the hills overlooking the town. The name Bettendorf was derived from a German word meaning "ridge." Bettendorf grew rapidly because of its location and for its connection to transportation. It was located on a major route between Chicago and Minneapolis. The city of Bettendorf began to grow around the original post office in 1872, which became known as "the most important post office in America." The discovery of oil in Illinois led to an boom in business for businesses in Bettendorf and elsewhere along Interstate 95. Businesses included automobiles, grocers, lumberyards, breweries, hotels and other businesses that supported industry during this time period.
