Bettendorf, Iowa is a small town located in the state of Iowa. The population was 4,890 at the 2010 census. Bettendorf is part of the Bettendorf-Hillsborough, IA Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named after General George A. Bettendorf, who served as the United States Marshal for Iowa County from 1881 to 1889 and as Mayor of Bettendorf from 1895 to 1897. The first settlement in what is now Bettendorf was made on April 12, 1871 by Wm. Halsey and his brother-in-law David Schnitzer when they established a farm known as "Halsey's Bluff". In 1875, Leland Stanford founded Stanford University in Palo Alto, California and offered land for an agricultural college in central Iowa if the community could be found a site for it. After weeks of searching among local residents, a group led by Thaddeus Stevens arrived at what became Bettendorf on October 10th, 1876 and began construction on what would become the first school building in what is now Bettendorff. The school opened its doors to students on November 3rd, 1877 under the name Central High School. In 1880 General George A. The town of Bettendorf was founded by John Nevin in 1836 as a small community on a bend in the Kankakee River. In 1837, Nevin organized a township and named it Bettendorf Township after himself and his brother-in-law, David Bettendorff. The first settler to arrive in what would become Bettendorf was Charles Goodnight in 1838. In 1849, the town became a village when it annexed the adjacent farming township of DeKalb. In 1862, an act of Congress created a new county seat for all of Iowa – Bettendorf – and this change forever altered the demographics and character of the town center which had been largely rural since its founding date over 350 years ago. Today’s Pettis Park district (named after Isaac Pettis who donated land for it) lies within what was once downtown Bettendorf; today’s downtown also contains several significant museums/historic sites including First National Bank & Trust Company building (now known as General Mills headquarters), Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church (founded by Reverend Jesse Willard in 1800), Prairie View A&M University campus, and various other buildings dating back to early 19th century settlement times that are now protected under the National Register of Historic Places listings program listing them as locally important cultural resources.
