The Bettendorf Air Force Base was established in 1942 as a base for the United StatesAAF. It served as the home of the 4th Bombardment Wing from 1942-1946, and then became an airfield used by both the United StatesAAF and the USAF during World War II. In 1946, it was transferred to the Iowa Air National Guard and served as a training ground until its closure in 1984. The Bettendorf Air Force Base Museum reopened in 1988 and is now open to the public. In 1941, when Bettendorf AFB was first established, it housed three squadrons of Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses. These bombers were used for strategic bombing operations against Japan during World War II. The 4th Bombardment Wing flew these planes from Bettendorf AFB between 1942-1946. The wing also operated Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes which were used for strafing runs over Japanese targets during this time period. In 1945, Bettendorf AFB changed hands again when it was transferred to the newly formed USAF under control ofthe Third Reich following their collapse at war's end. This transfer saw the introduction of many new technologies into America's air warfare doctrine including jet aircrafts into American airspace forthe first time ever! After serving as an RAF station in England throughout World War II, RAF Station Bentenbrückbach located about 25 miles southeast of Frankfurt am Main finally closed its doors after serving its purpose all along! With Wendelstein-27 AGL being set up at Bettendorf AFB in 1948 this allowed American pilots access to top German fighter ace Patrice Lumumba who had been shot down over France while flying an F8U Corsair! As part of this swap program some Luftwaffe pilots who had surrendered at war's end were also exchanged! Bettendorf AFB remained closed until 1984 when it reopening became known as "the home of Sioux City" due to its proximity to Sioux City Municipal Airport on US 71 south & west of town center! Now open daily with displays about how Bettendorf has impacted life within and beyond town limits, there are even exhibits on military aviation history within walking distance (just be sure not to step on any WWII relics)!

Bettendorf, Iowa is a town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,452 at the 2010 census. Bettendorf is the county seat of Polk County. It lies on the intersection of U.S. Routes 20 and 351. In 1846, there were only three buildings in Bettendorf: a Methodist Episcopal Church, a schoolhouse and a farmstead known as "The Grange". By 1870, there were twenty-one houses and businesses in the town. In 1907, the community had a post office and two stores. In 1916, Bettendorf became an incorporated city with a mayor and vice president; it also had an electric light plant and its first telephone line. The population grew rapidly during World War I due to war production in nearby Dubuque and other cities; by 1920 Bettendorf had over one thousand residents. During World War II Bettendorf was one of several towns in Iowa that produced munitions for the Allied forces; after the war it continued to grow steadily with many new homes being built until 1990 when it reached its current size of 5,452 residents

Bettendorf is a small town in Iowa, United States. It was founded in 1868 by John Bettendorf and his wife, Anna. The town became a national center for education due to its location near the University of Iowa and the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1915, Bettendorf was named after Frederick Augustus Bettendorf, an American Congressman from Illinois who served in the U.S. Senate from 1881 to 1889. The village of Bettendorf had a population of about 1,000 people when it was platted in 1868. It grew slowly until 1880, when it gained a post office and saw an influx of settlers from surrounding counties. By 1910, the population had increased to 2,500 people. The growth continued until 1920; at that time, there were 4 businesses in the town with over 100 employees. In 1940, Bettendorf had 7 business owners with 150 employees and 9 families living in homes built before that year alone. Despite this growth during the 20th century, Bettendorf has remained primarily rural with only a few hundred residents living withinIts borders today (mainly because of Interstate 80). Bettendorf experienced some major changes during World War II as many men serving on military duty left for war-related jobs outside of their home towns or villages across America such as shipyards and aircraft plants abroad; however many local businesses stayed open including a movie theater which reopened after being closed for nearly 15 years due to wartime rationing (it reopened on July 29th 1946). Some famous locals who lived or worked in Bettendorf during World War II include composer Leonard Bernstein and industrialist Jules Verne (both natives of nearby Decorah). Today much of what once made up downtown Bettendorif remains unchanged save for some updated buildings such as the old regional library which is now used as apartments/residence halls by neighboring colleges/universities
