Ankeny is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 21,624 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. Ankeny is part of the Des Moines–Iowa City metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Ankeny was Father Louis Hennepin in 1814 on his way from St. Paul, Minnesota to Cincinnati, Ohio. The site of present-day Ankeny was surveyed by Captain John Charles Benton in 1825 and named for General James Kappes, who had been killed during the Black Hawk War in 1846. A post office called Ankeny was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it closed in 1900. As one of the few U.S.-born towns east of the Mississippi River without a incorporated government before statehood,Ankeny relied largely on sans or semi-official associations for its early development and infrastructure; these included an merchants' association formed in 1830 that organized wagon road transportation between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City; a Mechanics Institute founded by Adam Clayton Powell Jr., father of Representative Adam Clayton Powell (D-NY); and local residents raised money to build churches, schools and other civic improvements through subscription drives during the 1840s and 1850s." In 1860, when Iowa became a state under Reorganization Act No 3 of 1861 (15 U.S.C § 626), Ankeny became its county seat with jurisdiction over all but two counties north of Interstate 80: Mason County (the easternmost)and Polk County (the westernmost). In 1893 an act creating Polk County defined it as including alloakwood Hills eastward to Boone Road." Polk County erected a courthouse at 114th Avenue Northeast near 63rd Street Northwest soon after becoming operational; this building served as both county courthouse until 1907 when it burned down and replaced by a new structure which still stands today - Polk County Courthouse Annex (). On October 1st 1909 “AnkenY” officially changed its name from Cedar Rapids to Ankeny after being selected as winner among several cities submitted for consideration along with Allatoona Junction Missouri because being one word long would have made confusion with nearby Eatonville Alabama (). Cedar Rapids Municipal Utility DistrictNo 2 took over operations from privately operated utility on November 15th 1912." On July 1st 1914 “AnKENY” again changed its name to honor then Mayor Harry Aiken who had championed annexation efforts throughout townspeople voted 54% Yes on April 8th 1915 making himMayor for Life! Ankeny, Iowa is a small town in the US state of Iowa. It was founded in 1847 and is located about 31 miles (50 km) north of Des Moines. The population was 2,090 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Ankeny were two families from New York who arrived there on July 7, 1847. The community was named after Isaac Ankeny, a surveyor and member of the Kapp family from New York City. The first store in Ankeny was built by John Hoadley Jr., one of the early settlers. A post office called Ankeny was established in 1850, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1856, a schoolhouse and other buildings were erected near the corner of First Street and State Avenue. In 1861, an addition to the school house were added for use as an jail; this building still stands today. In 1875, a sawmill became operational on Middle Creek; this mill remains operating today. In 1880-81, an opera house/theatre complex was constructed on Second Street between Cedar Rapids Boulevard and Main Street; it later burned down while being renovated and reopened as a physical education center with gymnasiums and dance studios in 1984-85. In 1902-03, construction began on what would become known as "The Great Wall" which forms part of downtown Ankeny today. This project consisted of 4 blocks long between Fourth Street and Seventh StreetsNW with many shops lining each block including banks (1902), brewery (1904), department stores (1905), shipping yards (1906) all within walking distancecomplete with their own piers! Today only parts remain: 4 storefronts remaining along Fourth Street NW from 1907 before it sunk into Spring Creek due to subsidence followed by demolition work beginning in 1959 to make way for Interstate 80 traffic! This entire section formed an important commercial district that served mostof central Des Moines during its infancy decades!
