Ankeny is a town in Iowa, United States. The population was 1,640 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ankeny-Clayton, IA Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Ankeny were French traders and fur trappers in the 18th century. In 1836, Arent Hennepin explored what is now Ankeny when he traveled through central Iowa on his way from Council Bluffs to build a fur trading post at Hennepin Landing. One of Hennepin's assistants was William Burt who built a sawmill and gristmill near present-day Ankeny in 1838. The village started as a small log cabin with six residents and soon had a school, store, Post Office and physician. The community grew rapidly during the 1840s because of corn cultivation by early settlers and trade with neighboring towns such as Waterloo. By 1850, there were over 100 people living in Ankeny with nine stores, two churches and one doctor. In 1860, an act of Congress created Clay County which included most of present-day Ankeny Township but no part of Waterloo or Harperville. The village continued to grow until it reached its current size of 1,640 residents in 2000 according to the 2010 census estimate In 1916–1917 during World War I various businesses within the town closed their doors due to production shortages caused by military spending; however all reopened after Armistice Day because war materials would be available once hostilities ended During World War II many ANKENY citizens served in the United States Military including Airman First Class Clifford Wohl who flew combat missions over Japan on Top Secret operations during WWII On July 17th 1956 local resident John Hinckley Jr hijacked an American Airlines jetliner outside Dallas Texas whileFlight 703 was en route from Houston TX to Kansas City KS Anker has been home to many farmers throughout history including Jens Jensen who became famous for growing corn on his family's farmstead that still stands today

Ankeny is a town in Iowa, United States. The population was 3,798 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The name Ankeny comes from Danish meaning "north wind." The first permanent settler in Ankeny was Jonas Sorensen in 1824. He imported two oxen and four horses to help him clear land for farming. When he died in 1827, his wife took over the farm and continued to run it until her death in 1865. Their three children also ran the farm until their father's death in 1886. In 1868, Amos Chamberlain set up a gristmill on the same stream that later became known as Waterloo Creek. The mill produced flour for local markets and also made cheese and other goods for sale outside of town. In 1870, another resident, Arent Kapp, built a house on what is now Main Street near Waterloo Creek. Kapp operated a grocery store and bakery until his death in 1912. In 1907, Ankeny had its first post office which was located on Depot Avenue between Wilkinson Road and West Third Street. That year saw the opening of what is now Polk County Courthouse which replaced an earlier courthouse that burned down in 1905. In 1916, Ankeny had its first electric light plant which was used by both townspeople and farmers alike until 1939 when it was replaced by a gasoline engine plant that provided electricity to all of Polk County overall (though some villages still relied on diesel power). Ankeny experienced growth during World War II with the addition of new housing developments such as Donnelley Manor (now part of University City) which were developed thanks to federal funding under President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal program Boomtown USA!. After the war ended, many people moved out ofAnkeny into larger cities such as Des Moines or Cedar Rapids due to low prices for housing relative to wage levels back then- something that continues to be an issue today given current job market conditions throughout much of Iowa!
