Ankeny is a small town in Iowa that was founded in 1846. It is the seat of Johnson County and is located about 25 miles south of Des Moines. The population of Ankeny was 7,898 at the 2010 census. In 1846, three men from Ankeny met with other men near what is now Mount Pleasant to form a trade cooperative known as the Iowa Agricultural Society. They developed an idea for a new town in what would become Johnson County and named it after John C. Ankeny, one of their members. The first post office was established in Ankeny on July 1, 1847. The town quickly grew and by 1870 had a population of approximately 50 people. In 1907, the community built its first church and soon became known for its beautiful architecture which can be seen today throughout the community. In 1916, World War I began and quickly turned into another war when Germany made several attempts to invade America; these were successful but not before causing significant damage to American soil (e.g., they burned down many homes). After the war ended, Ankeny experienced some financial problems that led to it becoming almost rural again until around 1960 when things started to change for good when Interstate 80 bypassed the town completely Making it easier for drivers coming into or leaving the area without having to go through downtown Ankeny Today there are numerous businesses located within walking distance or minutes away from most residents including banks, restaurants, health clinics/mutually aid groups as well as large shopping malls such as Des Moines mall which has anchor stores like Macy’s and Sears etc There are also multiple golf courses nearby making this an excellent place for family fun
Ankeny was founded in 1868 by John Ankeny and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after General Anthony Wayne, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first store in Ankeny opened in 1870. In 1879, a post office was established in the town. In 1895, Ankeny received its original street grid plan from the Iowa State Department of Roads. By 1920, the population of Ankeny had grown to over 1,000 residents. On July 5th of that year, Ankeny's first fire broke out; it burned for two days before being extinguished.
