The National Guard of Iowa was first organized in 1867. The National Guard of Iowa is the oldest statewide militia in the United States. The guard has played a vital role in our state’s history, and it continues to play an important role today. The Militia Act of 1792 authorized the creation of a national guard for all U.S. states except Rhode Island and Dakota Territory, which were not founded until 1861 and 1863, respectively. The act also provided for the organization of companies at each state’s request, with no right to be refused on account of color or sex. In 1868, Iowa became one of only six U.S. states to ratify the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution; this amendment protects citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures by federal officials. Iowa’s participation in World War I was short-lived; however, its soldiers fought extensively throughout that conflict on both sides of the battlefield. After World War I ended, Iowa again turned its attention to domestic affairs and did not participate in any more world wars until 1940 when it joined other states informing Congress about their intention to do so (Hawaii had already become an Independent State). In 1945, during World War II, many members from Iowa who had served in Europe were called back home to serve as part of Operation Overlord –the Allied invasion of Normandy –and then return home later that year for Victory over Japan Day ceremonies honoring those service members who had died during hostilities overseas ( January 6th ). After World War II came a time where people wanted their Guardsmen stationed permanently within their state instead of being drafted into war every few years like they had been prior toWorld War II (a rarity then). So Governor Tom Dooley called a special session of the General Assembly on July 1st 1949Hearing proposals from various organizations requesting that the National Guard be placed permanently within our borders we passed Resolution 161/49 calling upon General Mills president Wm Clements Philbin Chairman Federal Reserve Board Chairman Dr John Maynard Keynes former governors Adolph Hitler New York City Mayor Edward Koch Ohio Governor James Cox Former Secretaryof Treasury George Marshall Additional members included Representative Slade Gorton Representative Harry Blackmun Representative Fred Wright Congressman Elbert Hahnel
