Ankeny is a town in Iowa, United States. The population was 7,439 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Winnebago County. Ankeny was founded in 1867 by David Hegarty and others as a post office called Hegartyville. The name Ankeny came from an Indian word meaning "place of corn." Ankeny has been mentioned as early as 1851 in a report on the growth of Illinois. In 1868, the first store in town opened and continues to operate today. The community's economy changed dramatically when railroads reached Ankeny in the late 1800s. With new shipping opportunities open up along the Great Lakes, businesses mushroomed in Ankeny during this time period. Today, many businesses still remain within the town's boundaries; such as KFC, Sears, JCPenney, FedEx Ground and Applebee's restaurants. The city of Des Moines proper saw significant growth throughout much of the 20th century but slower movement into Ankeny due to its distance from major cities and lack of access to transportation options other than walking or biking; until recently that may have been an advantage for residents living closer to Des Moines because they could easily get work done without leaving their house or communities (despite recent investments made by city officials into providing bike lanes and better public transportation). However with Interstate 35W now bisecting most of downtown Des Moines proper making it difficult for residents who live close to I-35W to walk/ bike downtown there has been some realignment taking place within neighborhoods including increased focus on grocery shopping & dining out instead of commuting daily outside of neighborhood centers (though this does not stop people from trying) Although economic development has generally led to more social problems such as crime rates increase among all age groups since 2000s especially youth gangs memberships have also increased which can result in serious consequences both economically and socially for those involved particularly if caught by law enforcement

Ankeny, Iowa is a small town in the US state of Iowa. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. It is located in the northwest corner of Polk County. Ankeny has been called "TheBirthplace of American Democracy" and "TheTown on theMississippi." The first settler in Ankeny was Wm. H. Gerrish, who arrived in 1827 from Hardin County, Kentucky. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it after his father-in-law, Nathan Ankeny. The first store in Ankeny opened on May 6, 1829 by George Stephenson and his brother-in-law Jeremiah Butterfield (the first white man to settle here). In 1830 John Fenton built a gristmill on what are now First Avenue and West Main Street; he also erected a schoolhouse and store buildings. A post office was established at Ankeny on October 8, 1830, under the name of Waterloo; it was renamed Ankeny on November 15th of that year when Samuel Chase became Postmaster General. In 1841 James Saugus moved to Ankeny from Brooklyn Heights in New York City with his family and set up an operation as a flour miller and grocery store which he operated until his death in 1909. His son Edward Saugus took over operations after his father's death . In 1865 Jacob Ransom founded Ransom Canning Company which manufactured canned goods for sale throughout America . By 1903 there were seventeen businesses operating out of an estimated population of 1,200 people including eighty farms In 1907 Jerald Peebles bought the canning company from Jacob Ransom's son Edward Saugus and changed its name to Peebles Canning Company ; this led to production growth during World War II as food requirements increased for troops overseas A new high school opened in 1958 named after Drs.(Mrs.) Hazel Richardson Davenport (1884-1963) who served as the local superintendent for thirty years; she also donated land for development around her high school campus . In 1972 Parkview Elementary School replaced Independence High School which had been closed due to budget cuts . Over time other schools have followed suit such As Apple Valley Middle School (opened 1999), Florence Christian Academy (opened 2003), Indianola Senior Citizens home/school open since 2004 (closed 2006) And finally Onslow Junior/Senior High School which opened September 2009
