He organized a committee to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) of land from Henry Dodge for $10 per acre ($1 per sq m). This group formed the nucleus of what would become Ankeny Township in 1838 or 1840. In 1846, John Hulbert founded Hulbert’s Mills that produced flour for local markets throughout easternIowa. The milling industry reached its peak around 1900 with an average daily production of 2 million bushels (3 tons/acre), but commercialization caused output to drop during World War I; this declined again during World War II before increasing again following the war's end In 1957, Bethlehem Steel Corporation acquired control of Hulbert’s Mills which led to a rapid decline in production until it closed in 1984 In 2006, Thalom Acheson Company merged with George Wirth Paper Products Incorporated creating America’s fifth largest paper mill complex including Ankeny Mill Complex Today, Ankeny has a population of approximately 1,052 and provides active economic development through its businesses such as agriculture, health care and manufacturing

Ankeny is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 9,876 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Ankeny-West Des Moines-Hemphill, IA Micropolitan Statistical Area. In 1836 an act of Congress authorized the erection of a military post at this locality by Colonel John Davenport as part of efforts to control the Indian nations west of the Mississippi River. This post came to be known as Fort Davenport and it continued to exist until 1886 when it was discontinued by order of President Chester A. Arthur because its facilities did not meet modern needs for troops stationed thereon. In 1868 Ankeny became an incorporated town when it consolidated with neighboring West Des Moines. At that time its population was only 2,000 people but it grew rapidly due to waves of immigration: Poles (1869), Italians (1901), Germans (1910), Chinese (1920s), Mexicans (1930s) and others during the Great Depression era attracted by job opportunities available in America's booming postwar economy. Today's Ankeny has a population exceeding 10,000 and includes many cultural gems such as its fine arts center which features world renowned painters like Mark Rothko and Edward Hopper; its lively nightlife; and its rich history which can be enjoyed through area museums including the State Historical Society Museum which contains over 50% American Indian artifacts dating back to 1800; or through localWalk tours throughout downtown which highlight different aspects of local culture
