Ankeny is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dubuque County. Ankeny was founded in 1854 by Danish immigrants, and named after George Ankeny, an early settler. The town has since grown to become a major cultural and commercial center for the Des Moines metropolitan area. The first permanent settlement in what would become Ankeny was made on May 8, 1854 by Danish immigrants Ole Andreas Nielsen and his family. The name "Ankeny" likely derived from one of several local sources: an Indian word meaning "hollow," "cave," or "inner sanctum;" the Norwegian word Anken (meaning place where sacred things were kept); or the Dutch term Ankertje (related to ancient Achaemenid Persepolis). In 1875, George Sperling founded a grocery store in Ankeny that became one of the largest in Iowa. In 1916, he donated land to build the first municipal building which still stands today; this building still houses City Hall and many other municipal services. Today's downtown district retains much of its pioneer character with wood-frame buildings typical of rural Iowa towns during this time period. The city's growth accelerated following World War II when businesses began mushrooming as soldiers returned home from military service and took up housing development opportunities available in postwar America. By 1960, Ankeny had reached its peak population with over 30,000 residents living within easy walking distance of downtown shopping districts and public transportation options. However, during the late 1960s through early 1970s economic decline caused some job losses and displacement among residents as well asgnificant decreases in retail trade along with high crime rates led to a loss ofusterity for many businesses associated with Downtown District businesses until recent times when redevelopment efforts have restored most if not all former industrial/commercial areas back into thriving neighborhoods providing new employment opportunities for locals while also preserving much historic architecture now considered part of Utah Valley culture

Ankeny is a small town in west-central Iowa, United States. It was founded in 1837 by Captain John Ankeny and his wife, Ann (née Hodge). The first post office in Ankeny was established in 1839. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,812. The name Ankeny comes from an Indian word meaning "the place where the water flows". The first store at present day's intersection of US Highway 14 and US Highway 36 opened for business on December 1, 1881. At that time there were only two businesses in town; one operated as a general store and the other was a blacksmith shop. In 1903, A & W Grain became the first restaurant in town with seating for forty people. Two years later they added a bar to serve refreshments until 10 p.m., which began being called "The Lion's Head". In 1916, The George Washington Hotel opened its doors as the first hotel in town with rooms for up to seventy-five guests. Over time other hotels have been built including but not limited to: The Holiday Inn Express (1977), Embassy Suites (1985), Best Western Plus (1996), Wyndham Garden (2002) and Courtyard by Marriott (2005). In 2007 Ankeny had her own reality TV show known as "Ankeny Living" on A&E Network
