The first permanent settlement in Ankeny was founded by Abraham Ankeny on July 6, 1837, as Nappanee Township. The town was named after John A. Nappanee, one of the original settlers in this area. On December 12, 1847, Ankeny became the townsite of present-day Polk County when it split from Washburn County. On May 20, 1907, the entire city of Ankeny was incorporated as a village under the name of "Ankeny." The incorporation caused some friction with nearby town of Warsaw which had been established years earlier and received its own incorporation papers that day - an act that remains one of history's most bizarre legal issues to this day. According to the 2010 census, there are 10,848 people living in Ankeny (including 9201 households and 6595 families). The racial makeup of the city is 96% White American and 4% African American; 0% Native American; 1% Asian; 2% Pacific Islander; 3% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos make up 5% of the population

Ankeny is a town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The community was founded in 1853 by John Ankeny and named for him. Ankeny was platted on November 16, 1853, and began to grow rapidly as a result of its strategic location near the center of the new state of Iowa. By 1860, it had become the largest settlement in Iowa with a population over 2,000 people. In 1865, Ankeny became one of four towns consolidated into the city of Des Moines; however, due to its strong economy and growing population, Ankeny continued to grow until it reached its peak in the early 20th century. In 1911–12 when Des Moines lost its status as an incorporated municipality and became an unincorporated area under federal jurisdiction known as " Kokomo", many residents chose to move away from Des Moines because they felt that Kokomo would be less expensive and more diverse than Des Moines proper. This migration led to a decline in population size for Ankeny from 1912 to 1928 (although there remained some growth), before increasing again during World War II until reaching 1,814 people by 1970 when it fell back below 1,100 people again – although this trend reversed during the early 21st century due primarily to increased housing prices in downtown Des Moines which have driven many people out of town.[1] However despite this recent increase in population size much remains similar between Ankeny and other rural communities throughout America which has led some researchers[2][3]to suggest that "the aspects of lifeuniquely characteristic of small-town America will continue largely unchanged even if metropolitan areas around them become increasingly vibrant".[4]
