In Ankeny, Iowa, the Coast Guard has been playing a vital role in the community since 1922. The agency was founded by Captain John P. Nugent to help protect the coast and its people from danger. The Coast Guard has done a lot for the community in recent years, most notably during the 2012-2013 season when it played an integral role in rescuing more than 25 individuals from a sinking vessel off the Iowa coast. The Coast Guard is currently headquartered at the Kaplan Center on Washington Street in Ankeny. In 1922, Captain Nugent donated land off of Washington Street to establish the Coast Guard Station Ankeny. Ankeny, Iowa is a city located in the Iowa River Valley of north-central Iowa. The population was 9,611 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1854 by Captain George Ankeny and his wife Catharine Sneath Ankeny as part of a larger land grant to Captain Isaac Mills. It was named for General Samuel Ankeny, an American Revolutionary War officer who fought on the side of the British. From its founding until 1871, Ankeny functioned as a post office with only mail service. In that year, it became the county seat of Polk County and acquired its present name. From 1871 to 1957, it was also the capital of Iowa. On November 3, 1907, during World War I, Ankeny hosted an international peace conference called by President Theodore Roosevelt which led to the Treaty of Trianon. The city has experienced many changes over its history; some more dramatic than others. In 1865 when it became a cattle town due to increased competition from Omaha andCouncil Bluffs for grazing rights along the Des Moines River.,It lost most if not all its businesses when railroads arrived and ceased operations in 1886-87 because they were afraid of damage done by prairie fires caused by bison running off feedlots into nearby towns such as North Liberty and Clearwater (). In 1955 it again lost most if not all its businesses when Interstate 80 replaced Route 6 across town (), but regained some after construction began on what would become I-80 about two miles east of downtown (). The current skyline forms largely from construction projects initiated during various waves of suburbanization beginning around 1960: first through residential redevelopment following World War II shortages in housing stock; then through heavy involvement in local government complete with new schools and other public services; finally through continued suburban growth culminating in 2007 with completion of Pioneer Boulevard (I-235) which runs directly through downtown creating anew commercial district on one side while continuing existingresidential neighborhoods on another side
