The first European to visit Ankeny was Father Pierre-Nicolas Charbonneau on July 12, 1795. French traders and missionaries had been visiting the area for years before that. The largest settlement in what is now Ankeny was founded by Danish immigrants in 1836. They named their town after their leader, Ole Christian Andersen (1780-1854). In 1847, an act of Congress designated the current location of Ankeny as its seat and began developing it as a farming community with several businesses located there including mercantile house No. 5 and store No. 6 on High Street. In 1872, a post office was established at Ankeny and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1915, during World War I, the United States government allotted land east of Cedar Rapids to be used as a training ground for troops destined for combat overseas; this included parts of present-day Ankeny and Cedar Rapids proper. On October 15th of that year residents organized themselves into a Municipal Council to discuss how best to handle the situation which saw more than 2200 men from across Johnson County taking up arms against Germany near Carbondale northwest of Ankeny on October 16th – one man died from his wounds while another attempting to cross over national prairies into Canada was fatally crushed when his wagon overturned miles south near Wilder Junction . Groups from both towns gathered together for food supplies early on November 3rd but soon realized there wasn’t much left edible so they turned back after nightfall only leaving behind water barrels+ some horses+ some donkeys+. There were also reports that German cavalry had passed through the area earlier that day but no evidence has ever been found documenting this claim either way events quickly spiraled out of control with skirmishes potentially leading directly to military action not knowing who or what was attacking them! After days of peaceful protests by citizens angry about potential bloodshed ensued with skirmishes continuing until November 8th morning when militia arrived without warning charging civilians headlong into battle screaming “Halt!
