The Iowa Air National Guard's 183rd Airlift Wing (183AW) deploys year-round to support air operations in the state. The wing flies C-130 Hercules aircraft and also provides ground transportation for Special Operations Forces and other coalition members. In Ankeny, the wing enjoys a long and proud history of providing gift aviation services to local residents. The wing first delivered gifts in 1941 when it RAF donations were used to purchase four Beechcraft Bonanza airplanes. In 1951, the wing donated two Beechcraft Baron bombers, which became the squadron's first operational aircraft. Today, the 183rd Airlift Wing operates six C-130H Hercules planes and presents more than 350 gift packages per month to individuals, businesses and organizations in Ankeny and surrounding areas.
