Ames is a town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Ames was founded in 1851 by mechanics and farmers George and Sarah Ames. The first store was built near the junction of State Highway 5 and US-31. In 1875, the Ames Railroad was extended to town and the first school was built. The Ames to Council Bluffs Railway arrived in 1902, making it possible for people in Ames to buy goods they couldn't bring with them fromIowa City or Burlington. In 1905, John Waddell started a grocery store at Seventh Street and Washington Avenue which became one of the largest stores in town. In 1916, Omaha Steamship Lines bought the Ames Railroad and made it their mainline service from Omaha to Council Bluffs; this allowed for more shopping opportunities in downtown Ames than ever before. In 1927, construction began on what would become Iowa State University's firstever campus building on land that had been donated by Harry Emerson Fosdick (the founder of Sears Roebuck). Today IAU has over 40 buildings on its campus including the Patten Library & Learning Commons which opened in 2003 as one of only two collegiate libraries afloat with an online presence! The post-World War II boom period saw many businesses open up around town such as Easy Bake ovens (1948), First National Bank (1949), American Weigh Scales (1953), Stillwater Bottling Works (1969) and later KFC(1986). Many residents also worked outside of town starting companies such as Western Electric Cooperative (1948), Interstate Paper Co.(1950) and several clothing stores including Sears Roebuck & Co.(1963), JCPenney(1966) and Macy's(1982). Finally, many residences were converted into apartments during this time including those housing projects built by Housing Authority Of America known as "The Strip". Today most aspects of life have changed since then with many young adults moving out or leaving for better opportunities while older residents continue to live here albeit less frequently because of pricing pressures brought about by global events like Hurricane Harvey which impacted much of central Iowa last year. However there is still some semblance of community spirit thanks to small groups who meet monthly or quarterly throughouttown square seating areas called "Groups" where everyone gets together regardless of age or background for socialize, chat/planner/etc., listen to music or just listen - something that has declined somewhat since the late 1990s when internet speeds got faster but not affordable enough for everyone to join hands on occasion like back then!

The Gad company became one of the leading businesses in Ames, and its products included flour, soap, eggs and other agricultural goods. In 1916 the Gad company merged with another local business, the Herrick Company, to form the Herrick-Gad Corporation. The company continued to grow until it merged with United States Steel in 1998.
