The United States Air Force's gift history in Ames, Iowa is an interesting and unique aspect of its history. The USAF was founded on August 17th, 1947 as the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAF/E). From its inception, the USAF had two primary objectives: To provide air support for Operation Overlord and to protect American citizens and interests abroad. This fact is reflected in the overall history of the USAF in Ames. On December 3rd, 1949, General Curtis LeMay created Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron at Wright-Patterson AFB with a mission to "provide aerial cover for ground forces during operations against Nazi Germany". On November 17th, 1951, these headquarters moved to their current location within the confines of USAAF/E which housed both Luftwaffe command post (HQ) at Hurlburt Field and RAF Station Swindon. In 1957-1959 HQ moved again when it became clear that Andersen AFB would be open soon after World War II ended. At this time HQ also took over RAF station Wyndham Garden from the RAF who had been operating it since 1945 as a training base for fighter pilots. The move was controversial because many people argued that Andersen AFB should have been kept within USAAF/E while RAF Wyndham Garden should have gone to NATO or into private hands. Despite all of these controversies, HQ stayed in Ames untilactivated on October 31st 1959 when it merged with Headquarters Squadron at Holloman AFB to form 1st Fighter Command under General Curtis LeMay's newly organized Second Tactical Air Force (2TCAF). The first major purchase made by Headquarters Squadron at Wright-Patterson AFB was an F-86 Sabre jet trainer which arrived on October 15th, 1954. This aircraft became operational on November 6th and served as a test bed for new aircraft design concepts such asohydraulic landing gear systems and high altitude performance requirements for bomber missions against Japan. Unfortunately for 2TCAF during this time period there were several catastrophic accidents which temporarily halted development of new bombers such as the Boeing 707 series which were then being designed using advanced hydraulic landing gear designs pioneered by 2TCAF engineers! One significant event that occurred during this time period was the inauguration of President Eisenhower on January 20th 1953 attended by other members of Congress including Senators Harry Byrd (D-VA) and Everett Dirksen (R-IL). Ike laid out his vision for America's future which included increasing defense spending through innovative programs such as Project MXI which aimed to develop a subscale guided missile system capable of hitting targets inside Germany! In addition, Ike called for greater reliance upon fats instead of coal due to climate change concerns! However despite these important announcements from President Eisenhower & Congress there were still many challenges ahead For example; American soldiers fighting in Korea had not yet received their promised armaments but North Koreans did not yet have access to modern weapons! Additionally; some members within Congress felt that military appropriations were not getting enough scrutiny & they formed their own commission known as The Subcommittee On Military Appropriations recommending increased Defense Department funding levels although no action was taken! This subcommittee particularly focused attention upon problems with procurement procedures & management techniques within DOD!!! It has been said that without congressional oversight programs likeProject MXI would likely never have happened!!! In response to these difficult times 2TCAF developed several innovative concepts including Blue Angels flying demonstrations & providing flyovers over major cities throughout America in orderto promote patriotism & displayed U Saircraft superiority over any other nation!! These displays helped generate public awareness about our military capabilities while also demonstrating how much fun we could have flying our airplanes !! Additionally; Blue Angels flew escort flights along Ironton Lake outside Des Moines IA traffic stop prior to Iowa State Fairground where spectators got up close & personal with our planes !!! On one occasion they even managedTo land vertically onto an ice rink!!!!!!!!! These impressive displays led directly into Project Arrowhead which involved intercepting North Korean missiles targetting California!! During this project;Blue Angels performed more than 350 sorties !! Some memorable moments include: July 16 1958 when Blue Angels intercepted two launch attempts from Pyongyang resulting in two kills without loss Of Aircraft !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! February 9 1960 when after 4 days OF engagements—the last North Korean rocket attack—the Blue Angel package successfully intercepted its launch vehicle just aft end approach runway 13L at Kwajalein Atoll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally May 5 1963 when another launch attempt failed off Kwajalein Atoll......................................... By September 1962 all launches had ceased except those targeting California!!!!......... arrows_left

The Iowa Air National Guard's 140th Fighter Wing donated an F-16 Fighting Falcon to the Ames Municipal Airport in 1979. The fighter was originally given to the wing as a gift from General Dynamics, who had purchased it from the Air Force in 1978.

This event marked th e first time an American jet had been flew overflying America since WW2 along wit h Kingman AFB Arizona USMC detachment providing support for Operation Crossroads
