Altoona is a small town in Iowa, located about 25 miles east of Des Moines. It was founded in 1854 by white settlers and has been unchanged since then. The population of Altoona was 639 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Iowa. The first settler in Altoona was James Ahern. He purchased land from the Sac and Fox Indian tribe and built a log cabin on his farmstead. In 1855, Ahern married Sarah Epps and they moved to their present home on Big Creek Road. In 1862, Alonzo Hagenstedt arrived in Altoona and homesteaded land that now includes parts of downtown. He also operated a sawmill and gristmill on Big Creek Road. In 1865, John Wohlgemuth came to Altoona from Davenport, Iowa with his family. He purchased land east of Big Creek Road from Ahern for $200 cash or $4 per acre purchase price plus interest. Wohlgemuth farmed this land until his death in 1870. His son Amos Wohlgemuth became headman of the Pottawatomie Sioux Nation after he inherited his father's property near Altoona Lake. In 1872, Samuel Morse established a store at 5th & Fayette Streets in Altoona with fellow American Express passengers as customers before moving upstate to escape religious persecution back home at the time (Morse had become an atheist). Morse later served as mayor of Omaha, Nebraska from 1902-1906 under President Theodore Roosevelt; during that time he developed water supplies for Omaha through his company's construction work across America—a service which eventually led to him being honored with an award from President Franklin D.) Roosevelt himself upon its acquisition by Omaha Water Works Company ownership group headed by Aldrich Rockefeller in 1935 (see history#Samuel Morse#founder). Ida Boggs started storing groceries at 9th & Market Streets when she opened her grocery business there in 1906; that business continues today as IBP Incorporated (formerly IGA/Grocery Co.). One story goes that Mrs. Boggs donated her entire stock of eggs when she opened her store because she didn't want anyone else to have to go without eggs during World War II due to rationing efforts by the military forces stationed around Des Moines; however another version claims that MrsBoggs got so excited over having fresh produce available for sale during wartime shortages that she forgot about donating her stock and continued selling eggs even though everyone else had stopped buying them! Additionally, one local legend has it that if you knock on MrsBoggs' door while she's away shopping - no matter what time it is - she will give you some eggs if you're good! Altogether there are many stories like this one about people who have influenced or been associated with Altoona over the years... much like our own community itself!
