When the United States entered World War I in April 1917, Altoona was one of its warring cities. The city's citizens had taken to the streets to demand arms for their city and their country. After a delayed delivery of munitions, Altoona residents mobilized again and founded their own armory in 1915. That same year, they donated five rifles and fifty rounds of ammunition to the army. In 1918, when World War I ended with Germany's capitulation, Altoona citizens donated an additional ninety rifles and 1,000 rounds of ammunition to the military. After World War II began in 1945, Altoona residents donated an additional 2 million rounds of ammo to the military through local donation drives. In 1953, they became the first city in Iowa to donate tanks (the city also donated two armored cars). They continue this tradition by donating more than $100 million worth of tanks and artillery equipment since then. Additionally, Altoona has been a center for manufacturing combat vehicles including Mi-8 Helicopters and Humvees; it is also home to Army Ammunition Plant No. 1 which manufactures munition for U.S., NATO and other allies combatting terrorism worldwide. Today, Altoona stands as a symbol of community support during times of need – from local donations made during wartime onwards into today’s global marketplace where people all over offer help when things get tough.

The Altoona Military Museum is a nonprofit organization that specializes in educating the public about military history and serving the community by providing historical displays, education programs, and research. In 1992, museum members donated property to make way for an adjacent training range that now houses the Army Aviation Training Center (AATC). In 1862, an Italian family moved to Altoonna and opened a restaurant called La Bella Vita which remains open today. In 1871, the United States government established what would become known as Cedar Rapids Municipal Water System. This system provided water to all residents within its boundaries by way of canal systems and then turnpikes
