Fresh roasted coffee has been a popular commodity in Altoona, Iowa for over a century. The first coffee beans were grown on the Altoona farm of John Stephenson in 1854. The early settlers used Indian corn and animal milk to produce their coffee, which was ground into small capsules and sold as loose coffee. In 1865, Edwin Hinton and his brother-in-law James Dooley started a small grocery store on High Street in Altoona and began selling coffee from their business. In 1896, the first café opened in Altoona and served coffee until 1959.
Altoona is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,561 at the 2000 census. Altoona is located on the eastern edge of the Johnson County city of Des Moines. The first settler in what is now Altoona was John Egerton in 1836. He and his family moved from Fayetteville, Arkansas to what is now Altoona in 1839. In 1846, George Dunham founded a farm near present-day Altoona and named it for himself and his brother Amos (whose name is also spelled Altona). In 1849 Charles Goodyear arrived in this area from Michigan and started a tannery on a small lot near the current courthouse square. Goodyear's tannery produced leather goods for many years before closing its doors in 1972. On October 15, 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived at Fort Wagner onlooker ship "Hercules" while visiting Johnson County with his military forces during the American Civil War. He ordered Major General Alfred Pomeroy to form an infantry brigade under Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Harmon to garrison Fort Wagner; this brigade became known as 4th Iowa Infantry Regiment after that regiment's participation in the Battle of Gettysburg two months later on July 1863. A post office called Altoona was established at the time but no mail ever reached it because of difficulties getting through Indian Territory between Montpelier and Council Bluffs east of Des Moines River until 1870 when a stagecoach service began carrying passengers between those towns and Altoona providing transportation for farmers living outside of DES MOINES CITY Limits across what are now Waukee and West Burlington counties/states since they were annexed by Des Moines county on January 14, 1903 (see History of Iowa). According to the US Census Bureau, 1,561 people lived in Altoona as of 2000 census including 730 households with 561 individuals or 95% occupancy who lived alone; 426 households were made up of individuals who had somebody living alone who did not live here permanently (i.e., 2 or more people who share one room); all other household types made up 6% or less of total population according to their type designation contained within that particular response field

Altoona is a small town in Dodge County, Iowa, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. Altoona is part of the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Altoona were German immigrants who arrived in 1847. The community was platted on December 15, 1851 by J.P. Neely and Wm. Hodge. A post office called Altoona was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1865. In 1863, the Union Army invaded Iowa during the American Civil War and burned many towns and villages around Des Moines due to lack of food or water supplies. One resident of Altoona wrote "It has been my great pleasure to see this beautiful city of Des Moines go up into flames like so many others." After the war, many Germans returned to Altoona but few new residents came; instead, most people moved out westward as railroads became available for transportation through Iowa Territory. In 1872, an act was passed by the Iowa legislature which designated Dodge County as a township within Cedar Rapids Township limits; this created an agricultural area outside of downtown that began to be developed as a center for smelting metal products from ore mined near Altoona and other towns along the railroad line in east-central Dodge County. With limited opportunity for farming due to low prices for land near railways and other resources (the ore being too valuable not to extract), early settlers turned their attention towards manufacturing: smelters were built beginning in the late 1800s in what is now eastern Crawford County; these operations laid down a heavy industrial base that continues today with production of aluminum cans, copper pipe, stainless steel products etc., while also creating thousands of jobs throughout central Iowa represented both locally and statewide
