The Indiana National Guard was founded on July 16, 1814. The unit was first organized as a regiment of volunteer militia and was known as the "Terre Haute Regiment." On November 17, 1816, the Terre Haute Regiment became the 2nd Michigan Infantry. On May 3, 1827, the regiment became part of the 1st United States Infantry when it was reorganized from veteran militias. The regiment fought in the Mexican-American War and in Reconstruction following the Civil War. In 1886, the regiment changed its name tothe Westfield Regiment and served in various campaigns during Spanish American War. From 1902 until 1966, members ofthe Westfield Regiment received an annual military education at Fort Benning Army Base in Georgia. After World War II ended, many soldiers fromstateside service were drafted into service with units serving in Korea and Vietnam. As a result of this draft mobilization program, there were more than 4200Westfield Soldiers who served with honor during those wars. In 1946, after years of discussion among state officials and county commissioners about creating a state guard unit within Indiana's existing military forces, Governor Adlai Stevenson signed legislation creating the national guard unit at Fort Wayne Army Post theater on December 3rd. At that time there were only five guardsmen stationed at Fort Wayne Army Post theater: two artillery pieces manned by traditionals from neighboring Illinois companies; one rifle company manned by officers from nearby Gary; one signals squadron (comprising officers/majors from Hendricks County) manning microwave antennas atop an old munitions dump near town center; and one motorized infantry battalion (a detachment from Company K of First Battalion 5th Infantry) manning an old gasoline station across street from post office building for support purposes only). The garrison totaled just over 100 men but soon thereafter grew to nearly 300 due to enlistments announced for dual duty with both USMC/Navy patrols offshore off Miami Beach during Operation Urgent Fury following Cuba’s invasion of Florida on April 26th 1950 – troop strength had reached its peak by September 15th! That same year also saw activation of two new rifle companies which arrived via trainload brought over along with other equipment and personnel for use at Ft Wayne Apt Theater where Camp David had been established since early 1949 as an overflow site for GI barracks being built ashore! With no active duty troops assigned anywhere within miles outside Fort Wayne Apt Theater perimeter – includingSouth Bend – Legionnaires began arriving daily en masse not only for Christmas presents but also immediate replacements for departing Guardsmen who had gone missing or been called home sick! For several years now Legionnaires have been providing security & assistance to local dignitaries attending major events or appearances throughout central Indiana including Presidential inauguration fairs etc… On October 9th 1976 Major General John Fenton relieved Colonel George Hynes commandantat FtWayneAptTheaterof all duties pending replacement thereof by Brigadier General Milton Sievers – Lieutenant Colonel Siever having immediately assumed command role upon arrival! Westfield is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Hendricks County by population and it is also one of the fastest-growing communities in Indiana. The first settlers to what would become Westfield were a group of men led by Levi Coffin in 1824. The town was founded on the site of an old mill that had been destroyed by a fire. One of the early stores was built by George Haggerty and his brother James Haggerty. In 1829, John Wescott laid out a plat for what would become Westfield on land which he had bought from David Ritchie. By 1830, there were sixteen businesses located in what became Westfield including three banks and six lumberyards. In 1836, Gideon Wells laid out a block north of present-day Main Street for what would become known as Ivy Hill Cemetery. At that time, Ivy Hill consisted only of two houses and some trees. When Wells died years later, his widow donated all of her land to the village for use as cemetery ground. soon after this donation, many people started burying their loved ones in Ivy Hill Cemetery including Captain Abraham Lincoln who was buried there with his wife Sarah after they were married on April 14th, 1839. When Hendricks County was divided into two counties (Toonas Township on the east side and Hudson Township on the west side) in 1861, part of Westfield went to Toonas Township while parts went to Hudson Township; today's portion of Westfield falls within Hudson Township again but has since annexed much larger portions of Toonas Township making it one large community with over 10K residents according to2010 census estimates On October 15th 1915 Wescott's store burned down leaving behind its massive wall-to-wall timbers which still stand today as one of America's most impressive examples of late 19th century commercial architecture In 1919 when construction began on Washington Memorial Drive between Clinton Avenue and Main Street (now E Credit Union Place), much celebration took place as this represented perhaps the greatest gift ever given to local citizens from outside outsiders - $1 million from Ford Motor Company head Henry Ford II !!!!!

This funding was used to buy surplus military equipment from across America as well as build a host of new museum facilities related to our nation’s history during wartime times including one dedicated exclusively to American Heroes: The George Washington Carver Museum!
