On March 3, 1872 – less than one month after becoming an independent state – local citizens voted to create a town committee to manage affairs within their newly created community as well as improve infrastructure such as roads and schools within its borders On May 16th of that year residents erected a wooden frame courthouse on what is today Front Street between Third Avenue South and Fourth Avenue South just east of Interstate 465/I-465 Business Loop (now known as I-465/Wabash Road).
