Westfield is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana located about 20 miles east of Indianapolis and 25 miles northwest of Fort Wayne. The population was 5,804 at the 2010 census. Westfield is one of the oldest towns in Indiana and was first settled by German immigrants in 1788. The original name for the community was "Fremont." The Town site that became Westfield was on land that had been purchased from the Potawatomi Indians in 1788 as part of a treaty settlement between Britain and France. Three years earlier, on October 11, 1785, French forces under General Jean-Baptiste Carignan had captured Fort Dearborn (now East Chicago) after a three-day siege. On November 8, 1785, Governor Richard Moultrie approved a plat for what would become Westfield Township which included all present-day western Hamilton County including parts of current Butler and Kosciusko counties. In 1802, John Hartsgrove donated land to establish what would become known as Hartsgrove Park which still stands today across from First Presbyterian Church in downtown Westfield. In 1827, following the suitability of two lots within village limits – lot No. 4 being near Wells Street and lot No. 5 being near State Road 3 – James Proctor organized a meeting to approve boundaries for what would become Westfield Village proper; this resulted in the grant by President James Ketchum to Proctor & Company Allen Brothers “for building up an agreeable society”; with this donation new streets were laid out within village boundaries with Prospect Avenue leading south from lot 4 then north to State Road 3 where it met Centre Street just east of Lebanon Cemetery before turning northeast to meet Cooks Road just west of Center Schoolhouse at High Street or “the Main Street” today: these early street names are still visible along most portions thereof today although some have changed over time e
