Westfield, Indiana is a town in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Keokuk Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westfield was founded in 1830 as a small farming community and became a major center for grain and horse breeding. The town's growth led to its incorporation as a city in 1907. In 1969, Westfield merged with neighboring Terre Haute to form the largest city in Hamilton County by population and land area. The first settler in what is now Westfield was John Nicholson who arrived there on July 4th, 1830 from Putnam Township, New York. Nicholson had taken up land where present-day Northwest Corner Shopping Center stands today after hearing about grants of land given to pioneers west of Chicago by the then President of the United States James Kinsley. After this initial exploration, many more settlers followed Nicholson over time until it became known as "Westfield" because it lay within the limits granted him by Kinsley. In 1835 Nicholas Greer established himself here on some farms he acquired from Ebenezer Bigelow during Bigelow's tenure as Governor of Illinois (1834-36). This early settlement proved difficult due to lack of water and other resources necessary for agriculture; however Greer persevered and within five years had built several large contributing farmsteads including one which still dominates Central Avenue today - Greer Manor House! By 1840 only two homes remained standing in town: Greer's house on High Street between Court and State Streets and Miller's home on Broadway between High Street and Davis Streets (later renamed Third Avenue)). A new courthouse was built soon thereafter – Kempner Hall – across Clinton Road from where Union Chapel currently stands today (this building also served as Courthouse Annexe until 1975). A canal boat landing was also developed at this time at what is now called Bellefontaine Landing just north of downtownwest corner of Clinton Rd./High St., nearpresent-day White Stone Casino/Race Course & Westfield Elementary School (the Landing lies behind present day First National Bank Building). Census data indicates that total population for Hamilton County increased rapidly during this period with over 60% growth rate alone! However, like most rural areas during these times there were few opportunities for people to move into larger towns or cities so instead many simply continued living scattered around their original holdings until opportunity finally arose later on when transportation improvements made moving into larger towns easier… thus creating what we know today as “small town” culture among those remaining residents back then! Today much smaller families continue operating primarily via email or phone which often means less physical presence in our community but even so we feel very connected to our history & culture here
