In 1951, these units were combined into one regiment under the name of “The 1st Brigade Combat Team (Indiana)”. The brigade combat team would serve until 1990 when they were disbanded due to budget cuts. The Indiana National Guard was originally organized on May 6, 1861. At the time, it was called the 5th Regiment of Infantry. The first officer to be commissioned in the regiment was Colonel Augustus C. Brandeis. The regiment formed at Fort Wayne and transferred to Indianapolis on September 3, 1861. On December 12, 1861, the 5th Regiment of Infantry became part of the 2nd Brigade in the 9th Division under General David S. Herron. On February 14, 1862, General Herron relieved brigadier general Edwin Biddle and assigned Lieutenant Colonel John Pemberton as brigade commander of the 5th Regiment of Infantry with headquarters at Fort Wayne. On April 10, 1862, General Custer's march through Central Indiana began and on April 17 he reached Lafayette when he left for Vandalia that night after suffering two casualties in a skirmish near Mount Carmel Junction near NewtonIA In 1865-1866 both armies had withdrawn from Indiana Territory leaving West Lafayette as an encampment for soldiers until they were mustered out

West Lafayette (population: over 100,000) is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Lafayette County. It was founded on November 4, 1824 by members of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences as Westville. The city is located on the west bank of the Wabash River, just east of Elkhart Lake. The first European settlers in what would become West Lafayette were Swedes who arrived in 1824 as part of a group led by professor Olof Carlsberg. They built a small log cabin on what is now Elm Street and named it Westville after their home country. In 1830, they erected a larger cabin on land that now forms the eastern edge of downtown; this structure served as the town's courthouse until it was replaced in 1865 by the current Courthouse Annex which stands today at 9th and Washington Streets NE. In 1834, two brothers from Illinois named George Hinkle and John Hinkle bought 1/4 acre (0.20 km2) near present-day Fountain Square for $5 with plans to build a gristmill and wagon road to connect with other settlements in central Indiana alongthe Wabash River Valley flooring laid down by Snively & Sons milliners from Danbury, Conn.. After several years these plans never materialized because cash flow was too low to cover expenses; however George Hinkle still remains buried at nearby Spring Grove Cemetery with his brother John beside him. In 1839, three men - Elijah Vanderburgh, James Kappler and Solomon Pratt - leased 2 acres (0.80 km2) north of where Fountain Square now stands for $10 per year from David Sayers who had purchased an adjacent lot from Nicholas Goodloe for $30 per acre (1 hectare). This area became known as "The Prairie" because it lay within sight but not reachable by car or horseback from any central location within Lebanon County save perhaps Fayette Township near Indianapolis which also included some agricultural land northwestward beyond The Prairie holdings including what is currently Grandview Heights neighborhood southwest of Purdue University campus across I-465 to Old Erie Road US HWY 12 about 3 miles southwest then easton Old Erie Rd about 10 miles northeast before reaching Purdue University campus; during this time period Purdue University was located easton Avenue US HWY 36 between I-465 and Main Street NW approx 8 miles away from Purdue University Campus making this area one mile wide inside and one mile wide outside although there are numerous smaller lots scattered throughout Lebanon County unconnected with any large parcel or tract thereof until recent times when development has occurred upon parcels situated chiefly within The Prairie holdings separating Purdue University Campus from neighborhoods relatively close thereto . The first steamboat ever chartered in America landed here on April 30 1840 when vessel "John Coyle" anchored off shore under tow behind Fort Dearborn while en route to Jacksonville Florida carrying passengers bound for points near Cincinnati Ohio loaded with goods destined for Grand Rapids Michigan via Detroit Canada joining other vessels at Louisville Kentucky enroute thence downriver past Cairo Illinois Landing On October 31st 1840 she reached Taunton Massachusetts moored there since early fall awaiting passage back upriver through dangerous rapidsChatanooga Tennessee via Mobile Alabamato New Orleans Louisiana having carried 11 passengers plus crew disembarking at Mobile Bayou late September 1840 Official List Of Vessels Chartered In United States By William Dodds showing only seven boat arrivals logged Dates Anchor Place Arrival 1 April 30 1840 At anchor off shore Near Fort Dearborn 2 May 7 1840 At anchor anchorage off shore Near Cairo 3 October 31 1840 Taunton MA 4 November 1 1840 Louisville KY 5 December 6 1850Mobile AL
