West Lafayette, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Butler County. The population was 74,191 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Butler County after Indianapolis and Kokomo. West Lafayette is part of the Indianapolis–Carmel–Anderson metropolitan area. The first settlers in what became West Lafayette were farmers who arrived from Ohio in 1812. By 1825, most of what is now west Lafayette had been established as a town when land speculators bought 4square acres (1 kilometer²) from James Covington for $100 per acre (0.4 hectares). In 1828, developer Daniel Webster purchased 3 square miles (8 km²) northeast of present-day west Lafayette for $2,000 per acre (0.08 hectare). Webster named his new community "West Liberty", but due to its location on an important river crossing and because nearby Wabash River Bridge was not yet completed, the town never grew very large. In 1848, Samuel Colt founded Colt's Arsenal in West Liberty to produce arms including pistols and revolvers that would be used by American revolutionaries during the Mexican-American War and then during the American Civil War; this led to West Liberty becoming known as "the Armorytown". In 1863, general Andrew Johnson ordered west Lafayette residents to raise their taxes so that they could fund construction of Fort Stroudsburg which Johnson had declared war on Mexico over his belief that Mexico was trying to start a slave rebellion in America This event also helped lead to increased trade between west Lafayette and points east during this time period which contributed heavily to west Lafayette's growth rate over the years

The town began as a small Indian village named West Lafayette in 1824. The first store was built in 1827 and it continued to be the only store until about 1851 when a post office opened. In 1892, there were two schools in West Lafayette: one for boys and one for girls. In 1907, West Lafayette became an incorporated town with its own government. In 1865, veteran General Ulysses S Grant visited West Lafayette while he was campaigning in Indiana and praised its "fine institutions" which included a high school and college. In 1898, President Grover Cleveland made a speech at Western Municipal College where he criticized equal education opportunities for black Americans as being unjustified because white people had received them without due process or contribution from their respective races. In 1926, president Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his famous "Four Freedoms" speech at WMC where he honored America's past but warned that it must not become another European country like Scotland which had lost its way during World War I and been ruined by socialism and communism while millions of American soldiers had died fighting against those ideologies overseas - something that Roosevelt believed could happen to America if left unchecked under FDR's watch (See also: "The New Deal"). West Lafayette experienced some significant growth during the late 20th century; it has seen an increase in population by over 50% since 1960 alone! In 1865, West Lafayette was re-founded as a town and served as its official capital until 1887.
