Washington, Indiana was founded on November 3, 1812 by the United States of America. It is a small town in central Indiana, with a population of around 10,000 people as of the 2010 census. The name Washington is derived from George Washington and it means "the land where the forests are." The first post office in Washington was established on December 1, 1813. As a result, Congress passed an act providing for government quartering troops within three miles (5 km) of Indian settlements to prevent any further violence between American settlers and Native Americans In 1840-41 when Anthony Wayne became governor of Indiana he purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) east of present day Washington from Nicholas Stites for $4,500 Wayne then began developing this land into what would become one of the most important areas for farming in Northwest Indiana In 1845-46 when Abraham Lincoln was elected president he traveled through NorthwestIndiana and visited several villages near Indianapolis before returning to Chicago Lincoln decided that Hamilton County should be divided into four districts based upon racial lines rather than geographic lines so Lincoln could better understand black citizens living within white society On March 4th 1865 during the American Civil War Union general Joseph Hooker ordered General Order No 24 which requires all men over 21 years old to register with local authorities if they want to vote One hundred fifty nine men - nineteen percent of those registered - did not turn up for voting while another seventy one men - thirty percent - voted without registering
