The National Guard in the United States of America has a long and proud history. The first national guard unit was organized on July 16, 1792, when the First Territorial Congress authorized the organization of a militia to protect citizens from domestic attack. The Indiana National Guard was activated on October 1, 1907. At that time, state militias were not allowed to fight in war because the Constitution specifically prohibited such an act. On December 6, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for all states to mobilize their military forces for insurrection against the Union government. As a result of this call-up all states except Kentucky raised militias within two weeks. In Indiana more than 2,000 men volunteered for service and by January 1862 there were over 5,000 Guardsmen stationed throughout the state. As American Civil War approached many states decided to arm their own militias instead of joining the Union army. This choice by governors caused some conflict as units loyal to one side or another began disbanding while others continued serving with distinction through conflict after surrendering at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. By 1866 over 50 percent of all Guardsmen had either resigned or been discharged due to illness or soldiers’ wives’ demands for home leave during the war years (1861-65). After hostilities ended many troops returned home but enough remained in various local units across America to form what is now known as “the regular Army” Reserve (Army) on September 14th 1920 when it became permanent under General Order No 3145 “Organizational Changes With Respect To The National Guard Of The United States Of America” which stated: "All Regular Army Reserve Officers who have served since September 14th 1920 must retire at once." On November 15th 1921 Major General John J dome ordered all Regular Army Reserve Officers and members thereof who had continuously served since then and held commissions below lieutenant colonel rank up through colonel status into brigades subject only to orders from higher commanders; these officers could thereafter be attached by divisional command where necessary into brigade groups subject only thereto upon written order from divisional commanders commanding single corps or divisions... The Washington, Indiana National Guard was founded on November 15, 1892. The unit was first called the 126th Infantry Regiment and later the 124th Infantry Regiment.
